    1. [WIEAUCLA-L] Railroad News, No. 3
    2. Nance Sampson
    3. >From the Thursday, 30 October 1941 edition of the Altoona Tribune: The Fact Finding Board has met and heard both sides of the pro and con on the proposed thirty per cent increase in wages for Railway workers. The findings of this board will be given to the President of this United States, who will, if he accepts the report, make it public about November 1st. This is where the pressure of public opinion comes to bear on the subject. In many cases the public has been fooled about the actual wages of R. R. workers. The railroad workers himself is to blame for alot of this. He does not tell of the days he works for a hundred miles and spends from $1.50 to $2.00 for expenses. He loves to brag about the double or the triple that he has made. The public does not know that the engineer who says, " I made $16.98 yesterday," had to work the equivalent of two hundred miles which very often means working sixteen hours. The railroad workers and the employers never talk about the six-day-a-week jobs that pay a brakeman about $36.00 in actual money but out of which he has to pay his expenses away from home, which rings his wages below thirty dollars a week. Let's not brag about the big day we made once in awhile but tell of the smaller day as well so the public may be better informed as to our actual earnings. Clarence Thompson, engineer on the Omaha Railroad, is getting real handy at putting glass in windows. Seems they have a back porch that is enclosed with windows and sometimes they forget and leave a dog locked in there. Jack Kennedy, of old walkathon fame once said, "If you gotta go, you gotta go." This applies to dogs as well as others, so if you see Clarence going up the street with a window pane under his arm, you will know he forgot his dog again. ++++++++++++++++ Which reminds me, I have three dogs to go take care of! Have a good day everyone! Goin' to the dogs -- Nance

I looked very closely at the 1918 through 1920 books, but was unable to find anyone by that name. The school must have been very large even at that time. There were two graduating classes every year, with each class putting out a yearbook -- usually in January/February and June. The seniors are all listed by name and by picture, but only the class officers for the rest of the classes are named. Sorry I couldn't have been more help to you. -- Nance

All boys and girls, between the ages of ten and twenty-one who did not join the club at the March 6th meeting, and who are interested are invited to attend this meeting. County Agent S.S. Mathisen, who was present at and addressed the organization meeting, which did not at that time select a name, called attention to the fact that groups of five or more boys and girls interested in forming a 4-H club anywhere in the county will be given the full assistance of the county agent's office. The county agent explained the workings of the 4-H clubs and mentioned the various projects which might be taken up this year, emphasizing projects most helpful in the war effort. Officers Elected Henry Bohlinger, Jr., president; Earl Meye, vice-president; George Nix, treasurer; Bernard Mock, club reporter; and as song leader, Jimmy Baker, who promptly led in the "Happy Birthday" song for Irene Meyer. Mrs. Henry Bollinger, Sr., was chosen local club leader and an advisory committee of adults was chosen, consisting of Mrs. Wm. Mock, Mrs. Herman Meyer, and Seb. Nix. No action was taken to give the club a name at the organization meeting. This was deferred to a later date so that other members taken in later would have an opportunity to express their preference. -- Nance

    2. Hi Susan, Thank you for your reply. I may fire off a letter of inquiry to Eau Claire County and see what happens. A similar situation happened to us when we wrote to the state of Iowa requesting some vital record for one of my wife's relations. After several months we received a formal certificate, suitable for framing, proclaiming that the document we had requested could not be found! On a visit to the county courthouse, I found it for my wife in about 15 minutes. I hope to visit the Altoona area someday and perhaps my questions will be answered then. Good luck and good genealogy, Reid

    3. The pre-1907 vital records are not complete by any means. Whether it is a waste of money to send a request directly to the county is questionable. I have a ggggrandmother who died at Fairchild, on the border of Eau Claire and Jackson counties but a death record can't be found for her 16 Feb 1890 death. The questionable part is this: I have looked at Eau Claire's corthouse when I went home for a visit several years ago and didn't find it. That did not surprise me because their farm was actually in Garden Valley, Jackson County. But a letter to Jackson Co. yielded a response of 'not found'. A great aunt told me before she died that someone else in the family had gotten the same answer to a letter and didn't believe it, so they went to Jackson Co. courthouse and looked in person. (An option I don't have) She says they found it but before the days of copy machines in every public office, apparently wrote down the death date and that is all. On the other hand, I have found the Eau Claire courthouse to be quite helpful by mail. No easy answer to this one. I hope I haven't confused you more! Also, can you imagine what would happen in this day and age if we had to apply for things like this. If our name and address were in the paper, we would probably have to be in our vehicle defending ourselves against those who would be trying to rip off our new tires! Scary thought! My motto for today: Be thankful for everything -- even the tiny things! Oh, and have a good day everyone! I'm going to go to the local railroad museum today! The box car was put on the rip track for repairs. Conductor Ed. Laughlin with new "Mike" freight engine No. 404 on time freight train No. 86 from Minneapolis, on its way to Chicago, had a wreck six miles east of Altoona on the east boutd main line track on Wednesday morning, 21 October 1914. Six loaded box cars jumped off the track and tipped over. A broken journal caused the wreck. Geo. Larson with switch engine No. 335 was helping time freight No. 86 over "Nine mile hill" six miles east of Altoona. Switch engine No. 335 pulled part of the freight train No. 86 back to Altoona, and engine No. 404 pulled part of it to Fall Creek. The Altoona wrecker was called to pick up the wreck. East bound trains had to run on the west bound main line track between Altoona and Fall Creek for 12 hours. In fact, I just found a Frank Beck in the book "The Rivers Flow On" -- he was one of the heads of the Vocational School in Eau Claire in 1964. Could this be a descendant of the Frank in question? This is the only reference to the name in the book, but thought you might find it interesting. Still looking... Nance Sampson ECCMLO mailto:[email protected]

    3. I've been told my ggrandfather lived in Eau Claire for several years starting in 1875. He and his wife had four boys when he moved there and two more boys and two girls were born there. My questions is where did they come from. If anyone has access to old newspapers around that time, I would appreciate a lookup for the family of Frank Beck. Thanks! Doris Watson [email protected]

    3. >From the Daily Telegram, 20 February 1942: Poem, 'Am I A Soldier?' Written by Eau Claire Corporal at Camp The following poem, "Am I a Soldier?" was written by Corp. Lyman E. Werner, Co. B. 135th Medical regiment, Camp Shelby, MS. Corp. Werner, formerly a salesman for the Eau Claire Book and Stationery company, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Werner, 508 Babcock street, this city. The poem was originally published in "The Bull Sheet", enlisted men's publication at Camp Shelby. I've been in the Army about a year, I've tasted its joy, its hate, its fear. I've marched, I've drilled, I've sweat and swore. I've shovelled coal 'til my back was sore. I've walked guard in asteady beat. And stood at attention at retreat. I've been on K.P. with its pots and pans, It's scrambled eggs and frying hams. I've slept on a cot, I've slept on the ground, Some friends I've forgot, others I've found. I've eaten hash; I've eaten stew. And every day there's something new. I've bounced along in a dusty truck. My pay that day was a lousy buck. I've ridden blackouts in the dead of night. And I thought a soldier was supposed to fight. I've been in the heat of a blistering sun And worked from dawn till day was done. I've been in the rain, in wind and cold. I've heard Captains praise and heard them scold. I've worn a helmet and carried a pack Till my poor head ached; so did my back. I've put on splints and bandaged a shoulder, Now tell me, friend, "AM I A SOLDIER?" -- Nance Sampson ECCMLO mailto:[email protected]
