The store will operate under the "cash and carry" system. 15 Years Ago (1927) Judge Joseph F. Ellis, 84, Civil War veteran and practicing attorney here for 61 years, died early yesterday following a short illness. He was the father of the manual training department in the Eau Claire high school. Winners in the cage meet here included Eau Claire over Altoona 41 to 15 -- Nance's note -- :~( , Durand over Owen 21 to 15, and Fall Creek over Arcadia 25 to 20. 10 Years Ago (1932) Results in the first round of the district cage tourney here were Blair 15, Altoona 14 :~( ; Mondovi 27, Eau Claire 15; Menonmonie 25, Stanley 15; and Arcadia 19, Chippewa Falls 18. The latter score is protested as incorrect. Supervisors are considering voting themselves a slash in pay amounting to 20 per cent, a reduction of per diem from $5 to $4. +++++++++++++++++++++ This announcement has come over the wires and we are asked to pass it along to our users: GenConnect Upgrade "The entire GenConnect system will be upgraded starting at midnight on Saturday September 5, 1998. This will require that we shut the system down. The reason is twofold ..... it's not just a patch .... it's a re-write of the program that runs the system. Also, the Global Search engine has been revamped and mega-enhanced, which will require a total rebuild. No new postings can be allowed during this rebuilding period. Downtime is estimated to be 8 hours max (yep .... it's a huge system now!). Anyone attempting to use the system during this downtime will be given notice that it's being upgraded .... no-one will be left in the dark. List of new GenConnect Features: Visitor Toys: ------------------- Separate entry fields for subject and surnames ..... allows more descriptive subjects (non-surname words won't matter) Main page of each board displays the list of surnames for each query, in addition to the subject .... allows for more surnames to be entered 'Print' option now expanded to include the entire thread (user's option) Surname page will be auto-generated, and auto-updated weekly (more frequently with admin intervention), and will now be alphabetized and hotlinked to the query in which it appears. Cookie support expanded to include "date ranges". Faster, sleeker search engine. Multiple-word surnames supported - including the capability of searching for them. New search options added to the Global Search ..... soundex (enhanced over previous version), partial word match, whole word match, wildcard searching." To see what GenConnect is all about, visit our page at: http://users.rootsweb.com/~wieaucla/ecgenconnect.htm You are invited to check GenConnect out after Sept. 6th (to give the programmers plenty of time to work on it). Enjoy your new toys! -- Nance
>From the 30 October 1941 edition of the "Altoona Tribune", in the "Railways" column: The "Little Brown Jug" special roared over the Eastern Division Friday night at the speed of 170 miles in 180 minutes -- just 23 minutes more than the time of the famous "400". Not bad for steam engines and twelve heavy cars. While changing engines at Adams the C.N.W. officials were much surprised to hear two sharp blasts of the whistle while the 602 was passing the Pullman cars. Fireman Carl Volkman was watching on his side of the engine, as all good firemen do, and noticed a passenger about to step from the train. He reached for the cord to ring the bell of warning and was so surprised when he pulled the whistle cord insteead of the bell that he pulled twice just to be sure that he was not dreaming. Don't feel bad about it, Carl, because it is better to wake up two hundred than to hurt one. Just a touch of winter and Engineer Silas Jacobson has forgotten his baskets and begins to talk of warmer climate. He is making plans on spending part of the winter in Florida. Just how long his trip is to be depends on Cy and the weather. Silas has a hobby of making Indian baskets and can shape one as fast and as well as any native of this North America. How's the hunting? Wm. Belleshack and L. Kolkind were hunting last Sunday morning. No returns are available. +++++++++++++++++ I'm still wondering if anyone is interested in old sports articles. There are some great stories about some of the area high school football and basketball teams, with lots of names. Who knows, maybe one of your fathers or uncles was a big name in town because of his athletic ability. Do you want to find out? Let me know! -- Nance

>From the Daily Telegram, Eau Claire, WI, on 13 March 1942 -- Scarlet Fever, Measles Cases Reported Here There are at present three cases of measles, five cases of scarlet fever and 11 cases of German measles in Eau Claire at present, Dr. Charles K. Kincaid, city and county health officer, announced today. This does not indicate an epidemic, Dr. Kincaid said, although it is unusual to have so many cases of German measles. However, he added, it is well for the public to be on guard against measles and scarlet fever with cases in the city and avoid contacts that may result in spread of these diseases. And -- Hens Following Advice of FDR "The people of Eau Claire and vicinity may be complacent about their war effort," says Mrs. A. M. Peterson, route 3, "but my hens are not." To prove this statement she exhibits an egg weighing six ounces laid by a gray hybrid hen weighing seven pounds. It was found by John Hesetekin the morning after President Roosevelt's address to the farmers. A few minutes later the same morning, A. M. Peterson found an egg weighing four ounces. Yesterday a four pound White Leghorn laid a 3 1/2 ounce egg. The three eggs are exhibited in a box with a normal 2 1/2 ounce egg. Hope you all have a good weekend! -- Nance

>From the Thursday, 12 March 1942 edition of the Daily Telegram of Eau Claire, WI: "From the Files" 25 Years Ago (1917) -- Four Eau Claire boys have enlisted in the regular army, Harry Jones, William Johnson, Alfred E. Kruschke and Robert Timbrell. John Russell, Colfax, enlisted in the aviation corps. Ernest Bolles Putnam, son of the late Henry C. Putnam, died at Sea Breeze, FL, yesterday. He was 57 years of age. 15 Years Ago (1927) -- The county board tomorrow will consider a proposal to provide $65,000 for erection of a new county home to be located near the asylum building. Charles Beardsley, director of industrial education here since 1917, has resigned to enter the insurance business. It will be effective June 1. 10 Years Ago (1932) -- The district basketball tournament opens today. Participants are Eau Claire, Mondovi, Altoona, Blair, Chippewa Falls, Stanley and Menomonie. Ole Harstad, president of the Bark River Bridge and Culvert company, has offered Eau Claire County a 30-acre tract of land along the Eau Claire river southeast of Fall Creek for recreational purposes. (Nance's Note: This tract of land became known as "Harstad Park" and was one of the neatest places to camp, picnic, swim and fish. To get there, take Hwy. 12 south from Eau Claire, through Fall Creek until you reach Co. Rd. AF, turn left and go several miles to Co. Rd. HHH where you turn left again. Go about 1/4 mile to the entrance of the park on the right. I have many personal memories of this place, and although it has been changed quite a bit from when my father and mother took me there, it will always have a special place in my heart. I have taken my children there and am hoping that they will someday continue the tradition!) -- Nance
