My mother was a neice of Samuel Barnes. Webster and Doris Hoyt of WI gave me info on Mattie. Census, family Bible, and family papers make up the third source. Martha "Mattie" Burgett Barnes, born in Menomonie, WI 1880, was the daughter of Abraham and Martha (Hall) Burgett. She first married Francis Ellsworth Ward, son of Oscar and Ethel (Hoyt) Ward, who was born August 30, 1876 in Prairie Farm Town, Barron Co., WI. Francis and Mattie married in Menomonie July 27, 1896 (she must have been 15-16 years old). Their first child, Glady Ward, was born 02/07/1897 in Menomonie (count the months on your fingers!) and their 2nd child, Floyd Everett Ward, was born 07/15/1900 Prairie Farm Town, Barron County, WI but died 07/16/1900. Story is that Francis moved to the State of WA by 1904 but he had remarried Etta D. Atkinson September 1, 1900 (baby was hardly in the ground!!!!) in Menomonie and their first child was born in Menomonie on 07/31/1901 (Naomi Ethel). Frances was a carpenter by trade most of his life, but also worked at other jobs. Etta died in 1924 (6 kids total born in the marriage) in Olympia, WA and Francis remarried a 3rd time to a Birdsel Turner in Raymond, Pacific County, WA (3 children born to the marriage). Francis died 11/13/1938 in Raymond, Pacific County, WA. The daughter from Mattie, Gladys, was adopted by her grandparents Abraham and Martha. Gladys grew up and married. Seeminly, there was a divorce between Mattie and Francis.. Samuel Barnes and Mattie married in Menomonie 01/02/1902 (I have to send for the license.) or on 01/24/1902 (this could have been the reg. date of the marriage). Sam was from Canada originally and became a US citizen before the turn of the century. He was a Spanish Am war veteran. Family story has it that he played semi professional baseball for several years. I have him at home with his parents and single in the June 1900 US Federal Census Dunn County, WI. I cannot find the couple, so far, in the 1910 or 1920 US Federal Census. I found them in 1930 ("Mary") in Eau Claire County, WI. No kids were born to this marriage. Because Sam was simply Mom's uncle I have just skipped him for several years. Recently I ran across that he was a veteran (WI Natl Guard Co H 3rd Inf) of the Sp/Am War and I became intriqued. I have sent to NARA for his profile. I have not sent for the marriage cert out of Dunn County. Nor do I have a death date on either Sam or Mattie. My Mom is 86 and unfortunately can no longer help me with family stories. She was a wealth and I picked her brain for several years. I started on her family at ground zero...nothing had ever been done. She was a gold source for several years until declining health has set in. She had told me that Uncle Sam was in Eau Claire in the 20's and 30's. According to the 1930 census he is a gardner for a private family. Mom said that when his mother died he lived in the home there in Menomonie....but she was a kid (born in '17) and more interested in kid stuff than paying attention to family. She simply remembers Uncle Sam and Aunt Mattie. In '38 my Mom married and moved to MI and then the war came. She really lost track of many relatives for years and by the time she got into gear to keep in touch (50's) she either could not find them or they were dead. She has no idea when Sam died or when Mattie died. I have no pictures of Mattie but have a couple of Sam. He had the ! drop dead gorgous blue eyes that all the Barnes men were blessed with. I got sidetracked with another Barnes fellow and had sidestepped Sam for a while. With the info on the Sp/Sm War I just started to snoop around on him again. Hope this helps you. If you have any more info let me know. Since Mattie's son died in Barron Co I bet he was buried there....Francis must have had family in that county. I would guess the marriage was in hot water when Mattie was pregnant for the boy. I also assume that because so many of the Barnes family are buried in Memononie and because Mattie was born there that both Sam and Mattie just might be at Evergreen Cemetery, Menomonie, Dunn Co., WI. I need to check on that and also get marriage cert on them. If you have a birth date on Mattie please let me know and if you have further infor please share. Sherrie Sell
