Who would have thought it when we were in high school. I have been doing a lot of research in Dunn and Barron Co. We were part of the old gen . society at Barron and had worked on a special project of Civil War Vets and so I have some information on a William Biss. It is nowhere complete but may be interesting. William and Nancy (Studerbaker) who lived at Rice Lake. He died 1901. I have found information on at least two children, Samuel and William T. William the father was the son of Steven Biss (b-England) and May Ann Biss (b-PA), William was born in PA, he was already widowed, he died of pneumonia at Rice Lake and was a soldier, he is burried at Rice Lake. Samuel Biss married Mattie/Nettie Johnson at Rice Lake 20 Jan 1899 and was witnessed by Sam's mother & sister-in-law. They had four children, two that died in infancy. The two children that seemed to have lived longer are Hugh Edwin born 21 May 1899 and Myrtle Olivia born 19 Dec. 1902.(Glenn H. was born 27 Aug. 1900 and died 1 Oct. 1901 and Bernie A. was born 21 May 1899 and died 27 Sept. 1900.) (Bernie died of cholera abd Glenn died of tuberculosis.) I also have a Henrietta Biss married to Willard Bishop at Dunn CO Vol 1 Pg 70 on 22 May 1866. Her parents are William Biss and and Mary Ann Biss. This one is a little confusing and I haven't tried to find a death cert. for her to see if there was some error made on the parents. I have been thinking about joining the Dunn Gen Society but just haven't sat down to do it. My sister Rose belongs. Don't know if I helped out with your puzzle or just confused things more. Sincerely, Mary Crosby Peterson
Mary, I read with interest your comment about your working on civil war vets. I have been told that my step-grandfather may have had a brother who was in the Civil War. My step-grandfather emigrated in 1868 according to the 1920 WI Dunn Co Census. Unfortunately his last name was Johnson (or could have been Johanneson). Their mother was Christina, which also had numerous spellings and she, too, used the last name of Johnson. I know it's a very long shot, but do your civil war records tell the name of the parents of the soldiers? I've pretty much given up trying to find this brother, if he existed. I haven't had a lot of success finding this family on the 1865 census in Norway, either. My roots are in Prairie Farm, WI which is very near the Dunn Co line, but in Barron Co, that's why your research sounds intriguing. Is it on microfilm and can it be purchased? Thanks for any help you can provide. Kat 3petes@chibardun.net wrote:This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
