    1. [DUNN] Bio: Oscar Hovland - Colfax
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hovland, Loftus, Kitzman, Peterson, Samson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gFC.2ACI/1270 Message Board Post: Oscar HOVLAND, an enterprising citizen of Colfax, engaged in the meat business, was born in the town of Sand Creek, Dunn County, son of Samuel S. and Torgin (LOFTUS) Hovland. The parents came to the United States from Norway in the late 50's, settling in Goodhue County, Minn, where, however, they stayed but a short time, coming to Dunn Co., Wis before the Civil War. They were the fifth family to settle in the town of Sand Creek, and naturally had to go through pioneer experiences, suffering various hardships. Samuel S. Hovland died on the farm in 1884, and it was subsequently carried on by his widow with the assistance of her sons, until she, too, passed away in 1917. They were the parents of 13 children, namely: Samuel and Ole, now farmers in the town of Sand Creek; Theodore, a real estate dealer in Bloomer; John, also engaged in that business in Bloomer; George, a farmer in the town of Sand Creek; Albert, deceased; Oscar, of Colfax; Martin, of Glenwood City; Sewell, of Chippewa Falls; William, deceased; Anna, now Mrs. Charles Kitzman of Eau Claire; Rena, wife of A. A. Anderson of Colfax; and Gertrude, who is Mrs. Thomas Peterson of Rice Lake, Wis. Oscar Hovland was eduated in the district school in the town of Sand Creek. He remained with his parents until arriving at the age of 20 years. He then became connected with the lumber industry, which he followed on the woods and on the drives for about 4 years. In 1902 he came to Colfax and learned the butcher's business from his brother Albert, after whose death he operated the market for the estate until it was sold in 1919 to Fred Hovland. Oscar was then employed by the Colfax Store Co. as clerk until Oct, 1923, when, in company with Lewis E. Root, he bought the Hovland meat market which they are now conducting with good success. Oscar Hovland was married May 14, 1909, in Running Valley, to Clara SAMSON, daughter of Samuel and Karen (Olson) Samson; both her parents are now deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Hovland are affiliated religiously with the Colfax Lutheran Church. Extracted from the History of Dunn County, Wisconsin (1925), p. 691. ** Posted for informational purposes only. William John Yates, merchant, Fall City, Dunn county, was born April 19, 1851, a son of Thomas B. H. and Martha (Burham) Yates. He remained with his parents on the farm until he was eleven years old, when he came to Spring Brook township and worked for Christ Tubbs for the winter, then afterward went to school summers and worked winters until he hired out to the Knapp Stout Lumber Company, at Menomonie, to work in their warehouse. He remained in their employment until 1883, when, with J. M. Van Ness, he purchased the store and property at Fall City, where he has since remained. In March, 1891, his partner sold his interest to Henry Hesselink, and the firm now is Yates & Hesselink. Mr. Yates has just completed a nice residence, with two acres of grounds. He is a republican in politics, and has been postmaster since 1883. October 28, 1883, he married Etta Stone, who was born in Plainfield, N. Y. One child, Olive May, born December 21, 1887, has been given to them. -Transcribed from the "Historical and Biographical Album of the Chippewa Valley, Wisconsin, 1891-2", page 887
