    1. [DUNN] Bio: Sebastian Schneider, Menomonie
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Schneider, Barnette, Gugle, Ehrhart, Schanenberger Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gFC.2ACI/1355 Message Board Post: Sebastian Schneider, for many years a resident of Menomonie, in early days an employee of the Knapp, Stout & Co. Company, and later the proprietor of a successful meat business built up by himself, who is now retired, was born in Bayner, Germany, son of Sebastian and Katherine (Schanenberger) Schneider. Both parents are now deceased. The subject of this sketch after attending school in his native land, learned the blacksmith's trade there. In 1883 he emigrated to the United States, coming directly to Menomonie, Wis. Here he followed his trade for a short time and then entered the employ of the Knapp, Stout & Co. as a cook, remaining with them until the spring of 1892. Then in partnership with Philip Wiseman, he established a meat market at 413 Tainter Avenue, north Menomonie, which they operated together for 17 years. At the end of that long period Mr. Schneider sold his interest in the business to Mr. Wiseman, and in 1908 purchased a market at No. 520 Main Street, Menomonie from A.O. Strand, which he operated until January, 1921, building up a good business. He then turned it over to his sons, George S. and Herman F. who are now operating it. He owns and occupies a fine residence at 320 Tainter Street, and is fraternally affiliated with the Odd Fellows and the Modern Woodmen of America. Mr. Schneider was married Aug. 10, 1887 in Menomonie to Louise Ehrhart, daughter of Louis and Anna (Wyman) Ehrhart. Both her parents are now deceased and Mrs. Schneider herself died June 9, 1914. She was the mother of seven children: Mayme, now Mrs. Clarence Barnette of Oakland, Cal.; Philip, who lives in La Crosse, Wis, where he is connected with Armour & Co's interests; Ella, wife of Ed Gugle of Menomonie; Anna, at home; Goerge S. and Herman F., already mentioned, and Carl, who died at the age of two years. Extracted from The History of Dunn County (1925), p. 280 I have no further information about this family.

He acquired his education in the district school and in the school in Downsville, and subsequently until the year 1917 assisted his father to operate the home farm. In 1921 he returned home to Dunn County, and rented his father's farm, consisting of 200 acres in Sections 25 and 26, town of Dunn, and here he has since been engaged in dairy farming, keeping about 40 head of Holstein cattle, of which a part are pure blood and a part grade. He has a pure bred sire and is gradually improving his stock, and is conducting all his farm operations according to modern methods. 1. [DUNN] Buttermilk Coulee (Missouri Valley)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: DeLONG, HOYT, WELLS, SMITH Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gFC.2ACI/1352 Message Board Post: My grandfather (Forest Henry CASSEL/WOOD) grew up in the Missouri Valley outside of Eau Galle, Dunn Co, Wisconsin in the 1870s. He lived close to the DeLONG family and married Louisa DeLONG in 1896. This valley was also known as Buttermilk Coulee and a charming newpaper article was published in the Spring Valley Sun in July 1914 about Angeline Matilda SMITH WELLS HOYT DeLONG (1840-1931), mother of Louisa DeLONG. Here is a transcription: "The subject of this sketch is 74 years old and is an early settler to the town of Eau Galle, Dunn Co., Wisconsin being known to everybody in the town. With her husband John HOYT she came to Eau Galle May 22, 1862, they moved at once onto a farm, here they had to do the work which fell to the lot of all the settlers in the woods - clearing away the timber to build their cabin, and for a patch of land to raise enough to live on. Their cabin had a "shaker" roof-so named probably because in the winter they all shook with cold. The nearest store was 6 miles away through the unbroken woods and there were two tribes of Indians between to say nothing of the bears. Mrs. DeLONG says. 'John had to work out in good weather to earn money to buy a team of oxen. When he was gone I would burn the brush and log heaps which he cut and piled up in the rainy spells. During the winter I knitted 101 pairs of socks and mittens which sold for $1.00 a pair.' 'My husband enlisted in the army and on December 5 he died at Buford Hospital, leaving me with four small children to support. I had to carry flour and other supplies home from Eau Galle on my back, for at that time there were only 3 horses in the township.' 'Being all alone this way I dared not even sleep soundly at night. When I would sleep, I would put my elbow on the bed and support my head in my hands and take short naps. I could hear every noise. One night I heard something outdoors and my heart seemed to stop, for I said to myself, there are the Indians. They are planning to kill my children. Then I called on God for help and as quick as a flash God took all the fear from me and after that I could go to bed with my 4 little children and sleep soundly.' 'After I was alone, I chopped off 2 1/2 acres lot and plowed and raised grain and cut it and made flour, but I do not like bring those days back to my mind for in New York State, where I came from, it was considered a disgrace for a woman to work as I did, but a woman will do anything for the sake of her children.' She latter married George DeLONG, who also preceded her in death. Grandma DeLONG is the main stay of West Chapel for a great many years and is an earnest Christian. She's president of the Ladies Aid Society and is an active worker in the Sunday school. We are apt to read of the pioneer days and to consider them as belonging to a bygone day, when in fact many of the men and women who worked and suffered in those days are very vigorous and active members of the community.

    1. [DUNN] 1855 Dunn County Census
    2. Linda Schwartz
    3. New on the Dunn County web site ......... The Index to the 1855 Dunn County Census has been posted: http://www.rootsweb.com/~widunn/1855_census.htm This is the first official census for the county, after it was split off from Chipppewa County in 1854. As you look for names, keep in mind that the census enumerator may have spelled the names as he "heard" them .... not necessarily as the name is spelled now or the way you might expect they were spelled in 1855. 1. Re: [DUNN] Re: Looking for help
    2. This is an instance where a search of the 1880 U.S. census online may be beneficial. Go to: http://www.familysearch.org Click on the census link on the left side of the page. On the next page, select the 1880 U.S. census in the top box, and you can then customize your search. A phonetic search of Katz/Kaatz with census results for Wisconsin would probably be the first search to make. If you get a lot of results, you could refine the search for results for Dunn County. Good luck! -- Adele/Seattle
