Hi Jennifer, My husband's grandmother was Eleanor (Ella) Kothbauer and she had a sister Anna who was born in 1910 and died in 1953. I think this Anna might be your grandmother. Forwarded with permission . . . The Wisconsin Historical Society is pleased to announce its Wisconsin Name Index (www. wisconsinhistory.org/wni), a new online tool to help genealogists research their Wisconsin ancestors. The Wisconsin Name Index leads to more than 100,000 obituaries, personal sketches, and other short biographies of Wisconsin people. These texts originally appeared in 150 county and local histories, dozens of professional directories and biographical encyclopedias, more than 60 scrapbooks containing 30,000 obituaries, and in Wisconsin magazines and newspapers. Thousands include portraits and other illustrations. Users can search the database with a last name, first name, maiden name, time frame, and various other details. Photocopies of biographical sketches, articles, and obituaries can all be ordered online through our online genealogical research service. The name index was created not by amateurs but by professional librarians at the State Historical Society. Starting about 1870, our staff made a catalog card for every biographical sketch in each new Wisconsin county history. They made a similar card for every obituary added to the scrapbooks they called "Wisconsin Necrology", and frequently added cards for magazine and newspaper articles about Wisconsin residents. After more than a century of such work, the data on the original cards was typed into a database and the Wisconsin Name Index was born. Best wishes, Melissa McLimans Administrator, Online Genealogical Research Service Wisconsin Historical Society http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/genealogy/ogrs/index.html
John, Frank Jr. & Frank Sr. Kothbauer biographies are in the 1919 History of Buffalo and Pepin Counties. Andy Kothbauer used to drive a gas delivery truck in Durand in the 1950's. I know that in our family's cemetery plots have been sold but it is recorded to the sexton. :)
Rules about disposing of cemetery lots differs from state to state and how the original lots were purchased. My husband's family "owns" 6 lots in a Mason City, Iowa cemetery that the family would like to dispose of as no one in the family currently lives in Iowa. The group that owns the cemetery tells us it is our responsibility to find buyers. They suggest we contact families of people buried in surrounding lots. Still haven't figured out how to go about that project. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jayme Ann" <bosshog@discover-net.net> To: <WIDUNN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 14, 2003 11:15 AM Subject: Re: [DUNN] Re: Plot ownership > The sexton of the cemetery should know who the original owner was. The sexton of the cemetery should know who the original owner was. Then the ownership continues on down the line in the immediate family. Usually after a generation or two.. the sexton/cemetery association will ask the family to give back the remaining lots to the cemetery. Owning a cemetery lot is not like a piece of real estate. The owner.. or the heirs are not at liberty to "sell" the lot(s). All transactions must go through the cemetery sexton/association. Some people have their lots "deeded". This still doesn't give them liberty to "sell" the lot. A deed to a cemetery lot is usually registered at the county courthouse too. So, if your cemetery sexton can't provide you with the original ownership of a lot.. check with the county register of deeds office, It just might be there. If still concerned as to who would own the lot after all these years.. ask the cemetery sexton for a copy of the by-laws. It may be spelled out there. Jayme :-))

I would assume unused plots are passed down to family upon the death of the original owner.
