Do you have a death date for Jane Nolan Cassel? Wanted to thank you for the pictures!! I showed my husband last night. He had never saw a picture of his grandmother Connie Cassel Meier. In the other picture is Mrs. J. Cassel, John Cassel's widow? I figured it couldn't be Joseph Wyle's widow because them moved to Nebraska. Do you have much on Joseph Wylie Cassel's family? I have some that someone sent me a year or two ago. Be glad to share. Another thing, Your data has a Susan Cassel and a Alice Cassel but I never found both of them on any census or in the Jim Meier book. I found once a Susan Cassel age 3 in the 1860 Clayton Co., Iowa census and then a Alice S. Cassel in the 1870 census. Jim only lists Alice and in the picture of all of the Cassel children that I spoke about in the e-mail, there is only three girls, Eliza, Catherine, and Alice. What do you think? Do you think that Alice is Alice Susan?

I knew he had to be related somehow for George to be living with them. Thanks for George's middle name. We never had that!! Interesting that Eliza married her brother-in-law after his brother died. Do you think that the Raitz that I mentioned that married one of the Cassel girls is related to your Raitz family? I will try to check out other Rooney connections in the book that James Meier wrote. I wish I could ask him about his research but he died in 1998 and his brother Robert Meier finished the book and got it in the hands of family. I have talked to Robert but he hadn't done any of the research and couldn't give me any answers. Jacob G. Cassel was supposed to have come from Wayne County, Ohio before moving to Iowa. I looked up some census for Wayne county but didn't find anything but I did find some land records with some other Cassels there. Stephen Cassel bought 8 acres there on Aug. 6, 1834 at the Wooster Ohio land office. The name James Ligget is on the record too. Also 2 Castle's; John T., and Samuel Castle bought land in Waupaukonetta (can't find this place on the map) and Samuel in Wooster, OH. Wooster is in Wayne County, OH. Love to find out who Jacob's parents were. Jim's book says that Jacob died in Wisconsin and is buried in Waubeek Cemetery. Jim lived in the area his whole life so but I don't know if he saw a tombstone for Jacob or not or whether he got that info from somewhere else. The down side to his book is that it doesn't have very many sources. He does say that he found census records etc. but doesn't document them. Where did you info come from for his death in Iowa? Got to check some more messages.

When I visited both the Eau Galle and Waubeek Cemeteries last year I didn't find Jacob CASSEL's gravestone ... really wish I hadn't missed it. I'll correct the burial location to Waubeek and will confirm it next summer when I head back to Eau Galle. Thanks for the correction. Kathy

My Dad grew up with CASSELs and ROONEYs and says there are many connections -- we have a few pictures, but I've come up with little evidence to date. One of the other names in our family is RAITZ, from Fountain City, Buffalo Co, Wisconsin. Forest CASSEL WOOD married Maybelle RAITZ in 1927 after the death of his first wife (Louisa DeLONG). We've found a great deal of information about the RAITZ family. The George CASSEL living with Walter and Maria WOOD in the 1870 Census is George Grabel CASSEL, son of Jacob G CASSEL and future husband of Mary Belle THOMPSON. Walter WOOD is George WOOD's brother. George was married to Eliza CASSEL and they adopted my grandfather Forest Henry CASSEL WOOD (his birth mother was Alice CASSEL). In 1903 Walter WOOD and Eliza CASSEL WOOD married when their spouses both died. I'ts really a convuluted story and with each piece of the puzzle I'm finding it to get even more complicated ... but it's great fun to put it together! Kathy

He has: "We know that the Jacob Cassel family moved to Iowa, (from Ohio) in 1855 and later moved to Eau Galle, Wisconsin. It's hard to tell what brought about these moves. We did find out that Jacob died when he was about 67 years old, and is buried at Waubeek Cemetery." What do you make of this? I know that my husband's Uncle Jim and his wife did a lot of traveling around to collect this information including several trips to Germany to trace the Cassel, Meier and Marheine families.

Wanted to check in with you about the Rooney connection, as you can see from my e-mail, George's wife was a Thompson not a Rooney, BUT their daughter Ruby Cassel married a Claud Rooney on May 16, 1905 in Eau Galle, according to the James Meier history of the family book. I've been having problems with sending attachments by e-mail or uploading to my websites since I changed to msn in Feb. If you have any ideas, please let me know. (noticed you were on msn too) Did I see somewhere you were checking on the Raitt name? Seemed like I did, but I can't remember. Found that one of William Cassel's daughters, Josie married a Charles Raitt of Durand, Wis. James Meier book mentions too that "there are Rooney's buried in the Waubeek Cemetery, Waubeek Twp., located on County Road D, a few miles east of Eau Galle on the way to Durand." Also in the 1870 census for Dunn County, Wis there is a: Wood, Walter age 29 Farmer b. New York Wood, Maria age 21 Keeps. H. b. Penn Cassil, George age 18 Laborer on Farm b. Ohio I think this is George Cassel, son of Jacob because just a few houses away is family of Mary Belle Thompson, his future wife and in 1880 he is living with them and working in her father's saw mill. Do you know who Walter and Maria Wood are?
