He came to this area in 1926. he married Nellie Shafer on April 15, 1932 in Menomonie. He worked as a roofer for over 40 years. he also drove school bus in the Downsville area for 25 years. he retired in 1977. Shirley was preceded in death by his brother, Gordon. He is survived by his wife, Nellie; daughter, Arlene (Bugs) Cartwright, Menomonie and sister, Irene Flick, Spooner. Funeral services were held on Nov. 11 at New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville with the Rev. Richard Schroeder officiating. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in the Township of Dunn. She was the school clerk at Irvington for many years and was a member of the Royal Neighbors and held various offices. She was also a member of several other community organizations and held offices in those organizations as well. She and Herbert Kistner were united in marriage Jan. 12, 1925. Kistner is survived by two sons, Donald, Menomonie, Irvin, Colfax; three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Eva) Moe, Wauwatosa, Mrs. Roland (Charlotte) Noce, Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Jack (Jean) McDonald, St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Delbert Shafer, Portland, Ore., and one sister, Mrs. Shirley (Nellie) Thompson, Downsville. He was married Jan. 12, 1925 to Abbie Shafer who survives with three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Eva) Moe, Wauwatosa; Mrs. Roland (Charlotte) Noce, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Jack (Jean) McDonald, St. Paul; three sons, Howard, Dickinson, N. I recall many small, 3 or 4 markers, cemetaries in the county back in the 60s as I traveled the milk route with a driver.) also;The spelling here in Dunn county WI is MENOMONIE, it was changed from the EE to IE spelling by the USPS in the days long before zip codes.
According to the 1830 census, Thora Burling was living in Chippewa Falls with her husband and children. It also says she emigrated in 1912. Have you checked their marriage certificate to see if it tells more specifically her place of birth? It would also give her parents' names. In the 1920 census her name was spelled Christenson. Both censuses indicate she was born in Norway. I'm trying to find out information on my greatgrandmother Thora Christianson. She was born in 1901, probably in Norway. S. Rossiter, should have been a day of happiness for the couple, but the death of Mr. Rossiter on that date, turned it into an occasion for sorrow. Born In Wisconsin. Delbert Squier Rossiter, 66, was a native of Downsville, Wisconsin, but had resided in California nearly 40 years. He will be remembered in the coast section, as well as here, for in 1916, he and Mrs. Rossiter, then a bride, made their home in Point Arena. Later they moved to Greenwood, and then to Fort Bragg where Mr. Rossiter was engaged in the work of bridge carpenter around Ten Mile, Rockpoint and other sections adjacent to Fort Bragg. The family returned to Point Arena to live several years, during which time Mr. Rossiter was employed in construction work for the late Supervisor J. H. Halliday. For the past 10 years the family home has been in Ukiah and it was among friends made here funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from Eversole Mortuary, Dr. R. A. Van der Las officiating. All Are Sorry. Sympathy in the loss of husband and father is extended Mrs. Florence Rossiter who on Thanksgiving Day, November 30, 1916, became the wife of Delbert Rossiter, and Evelyn, Nellie, Albert and Delbert, the children, all of whom live in Ukiah. She later came to Wisconsin with her mother and lived for some time near Webb Lake, and on Sept. 15, 1917, was married to Oscar Rosseter at Eau Claire. Mrs. Rosseter, who was always interested in church and community work, is survived by her husband, three children, Harold, Theodore and Rose Ann, and two brothers, Ralph and Herman Coleson of Mears, Mich. Mr. Rosseter died Saturday morning at his home. He was born in Minnesota on September 30, 1871, and moved to Downsville, Wis., in childhood. In 1911, he was married to Clara Creaser who preceded him in death, as did one son, Archie. Three daughters and one son were born to them, Myrtle, Murial and Mildred and Everett, all of Washington. In later years, Mr. Rosseter was married to Gertrude Coleson and they moved to Chippewa Falls at that time. Mrs. Rosseter died in 1951. Surviving are two sons, Harold, now in the service stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash.; Theodore and one daughter, Mrs. Clarance (Rose Ann) Hakes, both of Route 5, city. Also surviving are one sister in Downsville; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
