I have forwarded the following information to the list ... I am not a researcher here. But the original message was posted to the message boards and the follow up was posted to the mail list so I have tried to get the two parties involved together. He was born on august 17, 1842 in Aurora Illinois and lived there until he was 20 years old when he moved to Manchester Iowa. July 3, 1866 he married Mary Etta Utley of Cleveland Ohio. They had a daughter named May Elting in Whitewater Wisoncsin on December 7 1843. Maybe May was nicknamed Etta? She died December 12, 1930 in Sanjose Calcifornia and is buried in Oak hill Cemetery San Jose CA. My information does not say who she married. Does this sound like it could be the same John C. Massee? Let me know anymore information you may have and we can compare notes. Plus I will post a message on a new Massee web page that was just created recently. I came across a note in an unpublished book by Thomas J. Stavrum on the Stavrum family. It states that Phillip's parents were Joshua and Sally (Howard) Steves. I'm not sure where Tom got his information and we can no longer find out, since Tom is deceased. It also states that Jerome Steves was born 12 October, 1837 at Clarkson, Monroe County, NY. And Jerome migrated from McHenry County, Illinois to Dunn County, Wisconsin with his uncle, William Vasey in 1858. I'm not directly related to the Steves family. Jerome's son, Fred married Minnie Stavrum. Minnie is a half sister to my direct ancestor. I Recently learned that my Great Grandmother's parents were on the same ship Hammonia, from Hamburg to New York in 1870. Great grandparents were Joh. and Elise Helbig and children: Minnie, Dora, H.. Right above them was listed Johann Stoffel age 57and wife Marie age 45 and two children Joh. age 7 and Maria age 6. Johann Helbig age 32 was actually Franz Johann Helbig. Elise age 27 as listed was actually Louise nee Stoffel. Minnie age 7 was actually Wilhelmine Helbig. Dora age 3 was my Grandmother and was actually Louise Sophia Helbig. The H. 4 months was a son that died at sea. The Helbigs are known to have come to Dunn Co. at Menomonie. Did the Stoffels also come to Menomonie? Franz Helbig died in about 1874 and by May of 1875 his widow Louise had married Daniel Mittelstadt, a recent widower. Daniel's son Herman married Louise's daughter Louise and they had a son Harvey who was my father. Looking for a Stoffel connection. June Novak jnovak1937@aol.com
