So they must have come on ships from Germany, maybe Hamburg. Could they first have gone to Canada? Or first came into the US from Canada? (One of my Norwegian ancestors came that way.) How about the month of immigration? Probably spring or summer? Is the spelling of their last name fairly accurate (when they immigrated)? Norway has a file on people who left the county and the LDS has a copy. Maybe Germany does. I have found that many of my ancestors "forgot" when they immigrated and answered the census taker with the wrong date. Have you tried the naturalization route? I have had about 20% hits on that.
