Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZFC.2ACI/455.3 Message Board Post: I found the obit of Alois A. Roth while doing some work at DCHS. Here it is--dated Octeber 11, 1932 A. A. Roth, 71, Dies at Home Illness Forced Retirement Nine Years Ago---Funeral Wednesday An illness that forced his retirement from public as well as the business life of Superior brought death late Monday afternoon to Alois A. Roth, one of the founders and vice president of roth Brothers company. He died at his home at 1827 John avenue, where he had been confined, except for a few short trips out of doors in a wheel chair, for the past nine years. Mr. Roth was 71 years old. While funeral services had not been completed Tuesday noon, it was announced that Christian Science services will be held at the residence at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Following the services the body will be taken to Portage, Wis., in which community he was born. Roth Brothers company will be closed Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. to permit employes to attend the funeral services. T. J. Roth in Chicago. T. J. Roth, brother of the deceased received word of Mr. Roth's death Monday night in Chicago, where Mrs. Roth and he have been on a business trip the past several days. Mr. and Mrs. Roth wired Tuesday morning that they will not be able to come to Superior for the services Wednesday afternoon, but that they will go to Portage to attend funeral rites and interment Thursday. Alois A. Roth, was born August 31, 1861, in the Town of Rio, Wis., a hamlet near Portage. It was here that he and T. J. Roth obtained a grade school education. The death of their father neccesitated their halting their pursuit of an education and for a time they clerked in a millinery shop operated by their mother, Mrs. Frances Roth, who now makes her home in Superior. While still young men, A. A. Roth and T. J. Roth left Rio for the Great Indian territory now know as the state of North Dakota, and opeened a small general store. Retired in 1923. The partnership formed by the two brothers at the time was continued until 1923, when ill health forced A. A. Roth to retire. At that time he disposed of his common stock in Roth Brothers company to his brother, but retained his preferred stock and the title of vice president although he was physically unable to participate in the business. The roth brothers came to Superior in 1890 and open a small sore near Tower avenue and Sixth street. There several changes during the next score of years after which they expanded in size and took over a large store at Broadway and Tower. The store was known as the "Bee Hive". A fire destroyed this building. The Roth Brothers rebuilt, enlarging the building. In 1926, three years after A. A. Roth retired, Roth Brothers company moved to its present location at Tower Avenue and Fourteenth street. A. A. Roth was widely known in department store circles in the Northwest before he became an invalid. Not only did ill health sever his connections with business, but also with public life in Superior. He belonged to no civic or fraternal organizations. Survivors. Besides his mother and brother, Mr. Roth leaves his widow, Mrs. Clara roth; three sons, John H. and H. Carl, Superior, and A. T. Roth, Duluth; and one daughter, Miss Anna Roth, Mayville, Wis. The body will lie in state at the residence until the hour of services Wednesday, it was announce at the Z. A. Downs morturay. (Picture included with the obit.) Hope this helps with your search. Jackie
