    1. [WIDOUGLA] Re: Douglas County churches (Polish)
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZFC.2ACI/132.143 Message Board Post: Here's my two cents, if memory serves me... St. Adalbert's was next to some RR tracks on Belknap, across from the Red Owl grocery store. It was torn down probably around 1980. It was called the "Polish Cathedral". They had a beautiful midnite Christmas Mass. St. Stan's was in Superior, too, down closer to the "North End" of town, not sure what street. I think they had a school, too, still operating in the 1960s. There was a small Catholic church in East End, too, not far from the large St. Francis; I can't think of the name of it. When any of them were founded, I don't know, but they were all old. I don't recognize the Dedham name. Not sure if there were more Polish churches than the above 3 I knew of. Good luck!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZFC.2ACI/455.4 Message Board Post: I grew up in Superior and Roth's was THE place to shop. Clothing on the first and second floor, a balcony in between the floors overlooking the store, and in the basement I think there were kitchen items, etc. I don't think it closed until in the 1970s or so, tho I'm not sure how long the family actually owned it. Have a fun reunion!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZFC.2ACI/506.1 Message Board Post: Hi! These may well be the O'Briens I knew. I lived in Itasca, the last part of one side of Superior, until I was 9, and in the next neighborhood for several more years. O'Brien Oil Company was the big business there, run by Bill O'Brien. I'd have to ask my Dad to fill in details. Last I knew, there still was an O'Brien Oil office there, don't know if the family still owns it. My greatgrandfather was allowed to put a barber's chair in some part of Bill's office, to help tidy up the railroad men on their way home from work. I remember Bill as a friendly, nice man who occasionally bought candy or ice cream for me and the other neighbor kids. I'm pretty sure he belonged to St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Allouez (that next part of town). This Bill must have been about my grandparents' age, born in the late 1800s. I'm not sure I ever knew his wife, so she may have died quite a while before him. I think his sons were Bob and Eddy. Hope this helps! Barb

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZFC.2ACI/510 Message Board Post: Looking for any information about the SANDQUIST or SUNDQUIST family in Superior, Douglas, WI. In the 1910 Census I find Gust SUNDQUIST ( b. Sweden, 1865)married to Amanda ? (b. Sweden, 1879). Gust was the sister of Agnes T. SANDQUIST married to Nils CHRISTENSON. Gust and Amanda had 2 children. The story goes that Gust died in an accident and a few days later the two children died of diptheria. I have checked the pre 1907 listings but have found no info. Any clues would be extremely appreciated! I am trying to find Amanda's maiden name and where she came from in Sweden. Amanda later married Victor STROMDAHL in Duluth, MN. Thank you.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZFC.2ACI/503.1 Message Board Post: I don't know specifics of the census, but Allouez is a part of the City, between East End & Itasca (the last part of town on that side) and is/was mostly very old houses/buildings. The house could very well still be there. Once you get to that part of the census, there won't be that many pages to go through. Cut thru diagonally by a RR going to the oredocks, Allouez is only about eight blocks long (about 36th Ave E to 44th Ave E). On one side, it ran up from the Lake to about 4th St, and on the other from the Lake up to about 8th St, where another RR had tracks going through. I think past the 8th St. RR tracks it was "Allouez Acres". I lived on E. 7th Street for several years in the 1960s and early 1970s. And yes, it almost always was cold! Hope this helps! Good luck in your research!

I am trying to locate a grave in the Nemadji Cemetery. My mother went to the grave in 1980/81 with her sister and they did not take a photo, so we have only their memories to go by. The grave is for an Anna Zinder/Zinda, B: 24 Aug __?___, D: Aug 1906. Supposedly her grave is on high flat ground and near a large concrete pole of somekind. Does any of this exsist in the Nemadji Cemetery? I would be ever so greatful for any info you could give me. Thank You for your time, Sara

    1. [WIDOUGLA] Query: Bergeson/Johnson, of Superior, WI
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Bergeson/Johnson of Superior, WI Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZFC.2ACI/501 Message Board Post: My grandmother, Viola Pansy Bergeson Wetley, was born in Superior, WI on 1 Aug., 1902. You replied on April 19, 2000. According to my grandmother's application for Social Security benefits, her mother's name was Margaret Johnson and her father's name was John Bergeson. I presume that her parents were married sometime before her birth date. How would I find a marriage record for John Bergeson and Margaret Johnson? Also, I know that Margaret was married at least two times after John Bergeson. Her second husband had the last name Mann. She was married a third time, but I do not know that husband's name. No one in our family knows if John and Margraret divorced or if he died. How would I find either a divorce record for John and Margaret Bergeson or a death record for John Bergeson? If they did divorce, how would I find out more about what happened to John Bergeson? How would I find a marriage record for Margaret Johnson Bergeson Mann's second marriage? How about either a divorce or death record for Mr. Mann? Also, it is possible that Mr. Mann might have adopted my grandmother, since I do know that she used his name for a time. Would there be any records of this? Margaret used "white-out" to cover the name Bergeson on my grandmother's Baptismal Certificate. I would also like to find a record of Margaret's third marriage, if possible. Margaret died when my grandmother was still a child. How would I go about finding a record of her death and possibly where she is buried? How would I go about finding any school records for my grandmother, Viola Pansy Bergeson? After her mother's death, she was raised by an aunt, Edna Mae Johnson. The only records we have are of Viola's Baptism and her wedding to my grandfather, Halvor Gregor Wetley, both at Asbury M.E. Church in Duluth, MN. I have called the church, but was told that is has changed denominations since my grandmother's day and no record remain. Viola married my grandfather and lived the rest of her life in Elroy, WI, where some of her Johnson cousins also lived. My grandmother never spoke of her childhood or of any of her family. It remains a mystery to this day. I would like to discover and research my Bergeson and Johnson roots. Greg Burton burt87@hotmail.com
