Those from Germany, and there were very few, were not even close to the name Lawin. These border crossing from Canada records only go back to 1895, so I didn't try Denien. I can go into passenger lists directly looking for sailings from Hamburg or other German cities, if there are any. Have you done this? It is quite a task, tho, and I wouldn't do it unless you had a month and year however specutlatively (I know there is something wrong with that word). Jim

I think he came here in about 1866. Some of my elder living relatives believe he came in through Florida, but I haven't been able to find any evidence. Albert Herman Lawin was born 18-Mar-1876, Grunewald, Neustettin, Germany. By May of 1905, he was married in Minnesota. My mom thinks he came to America about 1902, but nobody knows for sure. I certainly do appreciate your attempts. TERRY

There were some Alberts and Augusts under the soundex for their surnames but my old eyes couldn't read all the info on the cards. Incidentally, they only go back to year 1895. Do you have dates of birth for Albert and August? I did get the obits for Harold and Esther Lynn/Lind and picked up some new info there. Jim Thompson Jim Thompson

    2. Gale, I list 49 Metzger's in my family tree. However, Samuel does not come up on my list. My Metzger's immigrated from Bavaria, Germany to Delphus Ohio 1853, moved onto Munich, MN., and finally onto Superior, WI, where two brothers opened a butcher shop. I'm not sure if or how, I can help you make a connection, however, I'm happy to share any information you'd like. Seems, as I write this to you, we've discussed previous. At any rate your posting caught my eye. John Hannan hannan007@aol.com

    3. Still at a dead end with Samuel Metzger. Any suggestions. My parents have both passed away and I am now living in Seminole, FL. I will not be up north for a few years, so it goes slow. I did fly to British Columbia to get facts from my cousin about Janesville, WI. My mothers sister still lives there and gave me lots of info. My mother's family came from Hungary. Still looking for the Metzger's though!!!! I have looked for naturalization records, but so far, found nothing. The Lawins bounced back and forth between Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Milwaukee Genealogical Society has never heard the name Lawin. I checked at the Iron Range Heritage Center, in Chisolm, MN, and they had neither of them on file. As far as I know those are the only spellings for their last names. Canada is a distinct possibility. I would appreciate any efforts on your part. Thanks.

So they must have come on ships from Germany, maybe Hamburg. Could they first have gone to Canada? Or first came into the US from Canada? (One of my Norwegian ancestors came that way.) How about the month of immigration? Probably spring or summer? Is the spelling of their last name fairly accurate (when they immigrated)? Norway has a file on people who left the county and the LDS has a copy. Maybe Germany does. I have found that many of my ancestors "forgot" when they immigrated and answered the census taker with the wrong date. Have you tried the naturalization route? I have had about 20% hits on that. Of course, maybe you're husband is right. Jim Thompson

I believe Denien's came in 1866, and the Lawins came between 1882 and 1904. My husban teases me that they were kidnapped by aliens from Germany, and returned to the wrong hemisphere.
