So it could have been as late as the mid 70's. But yes I think by the mid seventies babies were only born at Memorial Hospital in Superior, and shortly after that babies were deliveried only in the Hospitals of Duluth. This was a sad time for the Mother's to be in the area to have to go to Duluth to deliver their babies. This makes finding birth records a little harder as the family lived in Superior or the surrounding area and the babies were born in Duluth, MN. Making many out of state births. Many people go to the Douglas County Register of Deeds for their birth certificates and find out they need to go to Minnesota. (This is especially true when teenagers turn 16 and need the certificate to take driver's training.) :)

    2. My great grandfather, Orville Villemaire Ouellette (Willette), born in La Pocatiere, Kamouraska Co., Quebec, arrived in the US at Buffalo in 1849 on his way to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He married Celina Celeste Cyr in January of 1850 and settled down in the Town of Friendship, Fond du Lac County, where there was a large French Canadian colony. I contacted the Wisconsin Historical Society Area Research Center at UW-Oshkosh, requesting them to search for my great grandfather's naturalization papers. They found his declaration of intent to become a citizen, but nothing beyond this. He should have followed up, after 5 years I believe, to become a citizen. I have read in several sources that early immigrants typically filled out only their declaration of intent and believed that this made them citizens. Apparently they really didn't need to do anything else to continue living and raising families in the US. I found the same declaration of intent for an Irish great grandfather with nothing beyond that either. Hope this helps. Russell Prust West Bend, WI

I am hoping some of you will have had experience with this and can offer advice/assistance. The ancestors I am currently researching came to the US, Michigan and Wisconsin (Superior), in the mid 1850s and 60s from Quebec. Here are some of my questions: Do all immigrants from that time period have immigration papers of some sort? If your naturalized is there yet even more paperwork/documents to be found beyond the immigration papers? How would I go about finding such records in the states of Michigan and Wisconsin for the time period I mentioned above? I live on the east coast and cannot travel to these states, can this research be done via the internet or old fashioned letter writing? I appreciate any/all information. Thank you!!!

    3. C.Stone: I looked through the City Directories in Superior, yesterday, and found Chas A and Eliz G. listed at 1106 N 21st Street, in 1936. He was a brakeman on the DSS&A Railway. Also living with them was Chas E, a student. In 1938, they are in the same house, but Chas E is now a Clerk for the Great Northern Railway. In 1940, all three are still in the same house, Chase E is a trucker for GNRY. In 1942, Chas A has become a Conductor for DSS&A Railway, and Chas E is no longer in this city. In 1948, Chase A and Eliz G moved to 1602 Tower Avenue, where they lived until the 1955 Directory. Then they just disappeared. I could find no obituaries or any other sign of them. 1. [WIDOUGLA] Wis Death Certificate Changes
    2. Linda Schwartz
    3. Death certificate information restricted New law blocks media, public from learning how person died The Associated Press By Todd Richmond MADISON -- Death certificates won't list how a person died anymore, under new laws that take effect Jan. 1. Starting Wednesday, details of a death, including the cause and the deceased's long-term health problems, will no longer appear on death certificates. Only immediate family, direct descendants, government workers and others with a direct and tangible interest will have access to the information for the first 50 years after a person's death. There's people who want to know what someone died of who don't really need to know, said Chippewa County Coroner Katherine Gerrits. The press, for one. Most Wisconsin bills become law soon after the Legislature and the governor approve them, but the death certificate change is one of seven laws that state legislators decided will take effect on New Year's Day. Closing death certificate information has caused a stir among journalists. Wisconsin Newspaper Association executive director Sandra George said the provision reflects a disturbing trend of government officials closing public records. Wisconsin was one of 14 states that included cause of death and health details on death certificates, said John Chapin, state Bureau of Health Statistics interim director. Officials wanted to close the information to bring Wisconsin in line with other states, he said. Peggy Peterson, state Vital Records Office field representative, said some complained death certificates included too many details. Under the new law, families can decide whether to give out details of a death while settling estates and benefits. Government workers will still have full run of details to study death rates and trends, Peterson said. A committee of coroners, police officers and media representatives is working to define who has direct and tangible interest in the closed information. George said the biggest danger in the new law is some public officials may refuse to release the cause of death. Autopsy reports remain public record under Wisconsin law, and people can still talk to reporters, she said.
