#1: Is the present Oak Hill Cemetery in Horicon the former Horicon Cemetery? If not, where is Horicon Cemetery? #2: Is there (now or in the past) an Ashippun Cemetery? #3: Is there (now or in the past) a Brutons Corner or Browns Corner Cemetery? I am trying to decipher handwriting on some pre-1900 death records, and these names keep popping up as burial places. Also, who was Rev. Conant, and what church did he serve at? (Yes, the burial for someone is actually listed as "Cemetery of Rev Conant's Church, Theresa") Thanks in Advance! Mel
Dear Valerie, The HandBook for Genealogists published by Everton says there are state censuses for 1885, 1895, and 1905. Other state or territory censuses listed are for the years: 1836,1838, 1840,1842,1846,1847,1855,1865,1875. Wisconsin became its own territory in 1836. Wisconsin became a State in 1848. At www.familysearch.org most if not all of these censuses were listed. Hope this helps, Jane

Responses intermingled, based on information in Cemetery Locations in Wisconsin, by Herrick & Uncapher. No guarantees, but these seem like good matches (based solely on the name of the roads given in the query). Hi Valerie, I am not an expert in Dodge County records. Just a couple thoughts. Do you know what church they attended in Dodge County? Often cemeteries had a church connection. For instance, my family was mostly buried in the Old Lutheran Cemetery north of Watertown. That is not listed in an LDS records. You also might ask at that family church for church records of death and birth. I have had extremely good luck with church records. (And bad - letters not answered at all!) If you don't know the name of the church, you might want to contact all the churches in the town that make sense. The towns are not large. There is a wonderful archivist at the ARC the covers Dodge County. He is extremely helpful, and might have some death records, cemetery records, and immigration records. Have you ordered death certificates for all their children? Birth records for their children? They often list (hopefully filled in) the places of birth of parents. What are you looking for exactly - the place of birth? Parents' names? Good luck. I have some brick walls too. Sigh. Sincerely, Katherine Bellingham, WA
I am coming up empty-handed here in my search to place a relative in the correct Cole clan in the Town of Oak Grove in the 1860-1890 time frame. I went to the cemetery where she is buried, (Oak Grove Cemetery), but there are a number of other Coles there and I am not sure IF they are all related or not. Here is what I have: Harriet Cole was born 25 Dec 1833 in New York (this coming from headstone, Census records, and death record of their daughter). She married Marvin Matthew (sometimes seen Matthew Marvin) Goff who was born in Herkimer County, NY on 5 Jan 1826. It is unknown where they married, but I would hazard a guess (because of the birthdates of their children) that it was in Wisconsin - but I have not found any proof as of yet. (Harriet & Marvin had 3 children - Mary, who died @ age 7 in 1859 - Susan Medora, never married, 1858-1926 - and Wilder M, never married, 1870-1940. in the 1880 Census, there are a number of Cole households in the area surrounding Oak Grove - but what ones are related? I have my suspicions that John Cole (and wife Sarah) who has 3 children in 1880 (Eddy, Bertie and Bertha) may be a brother. I have not found any obit for Harriet yet, and her husband's was pretty bland and basic without much familial fanfare. I *did* however find a blurb when daughter Susan died in May of 1926 that picqued my curiousity more than a little..... From the Beaver Dam Citizen, Saturday, May 15, 1926: "HORICON -- The following out of town people attended the funeral of Miss Susan Goff....." and goes on to list the following people: Mr & Mrs Bert Cole of Gillette, Wis (my guess is that this is a son of John & Sarah Cole from 1880 census - possible nephew of Harriet Cole Goff) Mrs Rose Vroman & son, Oconomowoc Mrs Rose Clough & daughter Mr & Mrs Guy Wilson Mr & Mrs Arthur Wilson George Wilson & family Mr & Mrs Ed Cole of Oak Grove (I believe this is another possible nephew of Harriet Cole Goff) Mr & Mrs Ray Andrews Fred & Herman Lentz & families Casper Kasten & daughters Eli & Fred Keel of Lowell E J Tyler, Chicago (Elon J Tyler was cousin of Marvin Goff, Harriet's husband.) Mr & Mrs E T Freeman & daughters of Milwaukee Do ANY of those names listed jump out at anyone? Please contact me if they do - this is one huge headache I would like to put behind me. Mel
I have about the same brick wall. I found a number given to me about a year ago for caretaker of a Union (old) cemetery in Theresa where my GGG Grandfather is rumored to have been buried. Let me know if you would like it. I am just going to try it and will let you know what kind of a response I get. I am curious, my GGG Grandfather died in the same period of time as Joseph. Can you help me on where to go to find probate records? He left a farm, a wife and six young children so I'm thinking there may be a good chance of some kind of probate. I don't know if this will help but here is the address and phone number for the only funeral home listed in Lomira: Kietzer Funeral Home 565 Sunrise Ave Lomira, WI 53048-9529 Phone: (920) 269-4500 It might be a long shot but if you call them, they may be able to steer you in a good direction, maybe know of other smaller cemeteries in the area that may not be listed. I know Union is not listed anywhere. I'm looking for suggestions on any ways past my personal brick wall, which happens to be in Dodge County. I have Gardner Weston and his wife Ernestina ("Lena") Sell Weston on the 1880 census in Dodge County with their two oldest children, Adella and George. I have their marriage recorded in Dodge County (by a JP) in 1878. I have Gardner's family (brother Charles, sister Caroline, and parents Lucinda (nee Loris or Lawrence) and Joseph Weston) on the censuses going back to 1850. I have probate papers for Joseph's death in late 1859/early 1860. But I can't find graves for any of them. Gardner died in Fond du Lac in 1919, and his obit and death cert clearly state he was taken to Lomira for burial. Lucinda died sometime between 1880 and 1900. Ernestina is said to have died around 1886. Gardner and children lived in Dodge County (I have census records) until sometime after 1910. There are no death certificates to be found for Ernestina, Lucinda, or Joseph. I can't find anything on any of their parents (beyond the names on Gardner and Ernestina's marriage cert - don't even know if Ernestina's parents came over from Prussia with her). I looked through every hard copy Dodge Co. cemetery transcription in the Salt Lake City Library line by line and found none of them. They probably were all living in Theresa or Lomira when they died (except Gardner), and presumably all were buried nearby. I know this is long - but does anyone have any info or ideas? The church records at the Dodge/Jefferson hist society and the county library didn't have anything either, when I wrote to them. I'm running out of directions to run at the brick wall! I can't get back beyond Ernestina or Joseph and Lucinda. Heck, I can't even find a death date for Ernestina outside the family story that son Geroge was 6 when she died. Thanks! I would ask any old timer that I saw any where near the cemetery. If there are any unmarked graves, an older person that has lived near the place all their lives could probably tell you a ton about who is buried there. I have been taking advantage of this cooler weather to scout out some cemeteries in search of some missing family members (namely where did Persis (Goff) Tyler end up, and where are the Gadow, Werbelow and Essman families) - and now I have a new problem.... How do I find the name of some of these smaller cemeteries? I know they are recorded somewhere, and most DO show up on the county plat map for 2003.. but no one at either the Horicon or Beaver Dam libraries knows who I would contact about it. Hello, A site I went to a while back: Cemetery Junction: Wisconsin http://www.daddezio.com/cemetery/junction/CJ-WI-005.html might help someone. Jane
Hello, Have you done a search at www.familysearch.org? If you know a deathdate you can write to the county library and possibly find an obituary. Beaver Dam Community Library, 311 N. Spring Street, Beaver Dam, WI 53916. At this library they also have several cemeteries indexed of which your ancestors may be buried here in order to find a death date. They do take donations so it would be worth it to write them. Hope this helps you, Jane Michigan

Looking for information on an Ole Oleson from this county who may have moved from Norway to here about l849. They had sons Ole, b l849 and Thomas, b l853, our ancestor. Can anyone see if there is information in this county about them? I have Thomas' exact date of birth as Sept. 10, 1853. Would anyone be able to do a birth lookup to see if he was born in this county? Hello, I am new to the list. A couple of years back, I went looking for the records from about 1850 + for St. John's Lutheran Church in Williamstown. I went to a couple of different churches, but was told that they did not have the records. I looked through old church records stored in Lebanon (as I recall now) but did not find the ST. John's records. I need them to identify the movements of Heinrich Ziemer of Lebanon (1870) and his apparent family member, Auguste Ziemer Fischer of Williamstown / Mayville, who also was a family member of my Ziemers in Wauwatosa. I'd be happy to give a little prize / reward :-) to anybody who can find these records for me, with the births of the children of Auguste Ziemer Fischer and her husband Carl Fischer -- I live in Colorado and don't have time to really dig in to the Dodge Co. research. I am looking especially for records of a Carl and Wilhelmine Ziemer who lived with Heinrich Ziemer in Lebanon in the 1870 census -- I have every reason to suspect that these people were my g g grandparents. Thanks. Penny Ziemer Ford Denver
I currently have this checked out from the library for my own research until the 18th of August. If anyone would like a look-up of one (or more) of the biographies, please feel free to contact me at melmouse@charter.net. The index to who is listed is on the Dodge County web site, so just let me know the page number and I will get it to you! Mel
Dear Turner researcher, Have you checked any cemeteries in and around Lowell? There is also the Beaver Dam Community Library which is also the County library. They have SOME cemeteries indexed. They also have old newspapers on microfilm.(obituaries) Have you checked the 1860 and 1870 Census yet? At www.familysearch.org you can search the 1880 census if they lived that long. At that site also you can do a search for your ancestors. If you live close to a family history center you can get help there too. The family history center I am referring to is housed in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints near your area. The Beaver Dam Community Library is located at: 311 N. Spring St., Beaver Dam, WIsconsin 53916-2043. I hope this helps you in your research. Jane
Hi!, I am looking for information on the family and ancestors of Jonah Turner who appears in the 1850 census in Lowell, Dodge Co., WI. He is 63, born in N.J. His wife Charity is 53 born in PA. The children listed are Samuel L. 26, Marian 17 and Sarah 13 all born in Ohio. Any help appreciated.
Hello List, I am searching for information about Georg and Mary Weaver/Weber who arrived in Milwaukee, WI, probably about 1856 with at least three children; Johan (John) b. 10 Mar 1827-1829, Philipp b. about 1830, and Dorothea b. abt 1844. The family story is that John met Elisabeth Weber (born Brubeck or Bruback) on the ship and they were married in Milwaukee. Some of family moved to Dodge Co. and John and Elisabeth stayed in Fon du Lac County where their first child was born in Aug. 1857. John and Elisabeth are listed in the 1860 census in Fon du Lac and Georg and Mary and the other two children and listed in the 1860 census in Dodge Co. Philipp later married Anna Keifer in Dodge Co. After years of searching, I have been unable to find out how they got to Dodge Co. and Fon du Lac Co. I'm fairly certain they came from Bavaria. Please contact me if you know anything about this family or about how they may have arrived in Wisconsin. Any one having information about this family, please email me or write me at Shirley J. Miller, P.O. Box 303, Mt. Aukum, CA 95656. Thanks so much..
