    1. Oleson and Tidemandsdr families from Norway to Wisconsin
    2. Connie Beck
    3. I am looking for information on this Oleson family in Wisconsin. From census reports, I am thinking they may have gone to Dodge Co., Wis. If you find anything here unclear, please ask questions or make comments. Dear listers: I just found out that my ancestor's real name is not Ester Thompson. In Norweigan, it is Astri or Astrid Tidemandsdr. Astri or Astrid was christened 31 OCT 1824 in Nord Aurdal, Oppland, Norway. She married Ole Oleson about 7 OCT 1824 Ulnes, Oppland, Norway. Her father was Tidemand Oldsdr. His father was Ole Oleson and his mother was Astri Thoresdr. Astri and Ole had a son, Ole H. Oleson, b Nov. 11, 1849 in Norway. It says on his birth certificate that he died "single." Don't know for sure what that means. Astri (Ester) and Ole had another son, Thomas, b Sept. 10, 1853 in Wisconsin. When they lef Valdres on a ship to the US in 1852, they had Ole H. Oleson, their son, with them, but their other son, Thomas, was not born until l854 in Wisconsin. Ole and Astrid (we call her Ester) live on the Hilmen farm in Norway. Wonder if they ever had other children? Astri, as I stated, married Ole Oleson, whose father was also Ole Oleson. When they married 7 OCT l849 in Ulnes, Opppland, Norway, Ole was 28, making him born about 1821. The marriage certificate states that Astri was 25 at the time of her marriage making her born about 1824. Astri was the daughter of Timand Olssen and Astri Thoresdr. My questions: Is there a way of finding out when Ole was born or when he died? I am guessing he was born about l800-1815. I would love to have the same info on Astri's, Ole's wife. from the 1860 Wisconsin, Winnebago Co.,census: Ole and Ann (Is this Astri?) (she may have called herself Ann in the l860 census) had children: Ole - 10 Thomas - 7 Surn - 4 Juliana - 2 It says all kids were b in WIS., but some records say the eldest kid was b. in NORWAY. Anyway Ole, Jr., and Thomas are the right ages, but Ole, Jr. was not b in Norway, as this particular census entry states. So I dont know if this is them or not. Thank you. My earlier querie on other websites: Ester Thompson was born in Norway, I am guessing about 1810-1820. Before she immigrated to the U.S. (between l849-1853), she married Ole Oleson in l849, and he was also b. in Norway. Before she left Norway with her husband, she gave birth to at least one child, a son named Ole H. Oleson, born 27 NOV 1849 in Norway. This is all I have on her!!! Once she reached America, she gave birth to at least one other child: son, Thomas Oleson, born 10 SEP 1853 in Wisconsin. My problem is I can't find any census that holds at least all four of these names: Mother: Esther Thompson (Olesen) b in Norway Father: Thomas Oleson b in Norway son: Ole H. Oleson, b in l849 in Norway son: Thomas Oleson, b 1853 in Wisconsin Can you people give me suggestions on what I might do to locate them? What records are in Norway as far as birth records that might record Ole H. Oleson's parent's names? Do they go as early as l849? How do I find naturalization records? Where are they at? (Besides Ancestry?) I have subscribed to Ancestry and several of its packages, but I really hate to spend another $40. on naturalization records and not find anything. Are there naturalization records on the internet somewhere for free? ANY help is appreciated!!!! Thank you. Connie Beck 2765 130th St. Lenox, IA 50851 641 333 2537

    1. Re: WIDODGE-D Digest V04 #14
    2. Hello List, Nancy, There was a fire in 1877 in Dodge county courthouse so most if not all records were destroyed. Newspapers go way back. Perhaps an obituary or wedding announcement might give you some clues. Beaver Dam Community library has newspapers on microfilm. They also have many, not all, cemeteries indexed and on file. The address for the library is: 311 N. Spring Street, Beaver Dam, WI 53916-2043. This is a county library for Dodge County. You can get a photo copy of the articles for a small amount of money too. Have you tried ordering a film from the Family History Center that is a part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in your area? For a small mailing fee $3.50 you can rent a film for 3 weeks to view at the Center. Public is welcome. Hope this helps, Jane

    3. When did Wisconsin start keeping marriage records? Birth records? It's a long shot but would there be records for late 1840's ? And is there a researcher I could pay to retrieve a marriage or birth, on the list? Should your records start that early. Thanks in advance! i-be-leve@msn.com

    3. Mary, I really doubt that the two Georges are one and the same. It would have been really hard to be on the 1850 census in two different states, with two different wives, and two different one year old babies. Not impossible. But, also, not too likely. I would look to see if there are still two Georges on the 1860 or 1870 census records. 2. Glenn Gohr
    3. Marilyn, Thanks for the note posted to the Dode Co. WI list about the DOMEK family. I know a little about this family. One of my dad's cousins was Anna Gohr (1883-1931) who married Anthony "Tony" Domek (1880-1951). They lived around Emmetsburg and Whittemore, Iowa. My Gohr family was also from what is now Poland, but the Gohrs were Lutheran. The Gohrs came to Chicago and then to NW Iowa and settled near Whittemore, Kossuth Co., IA. Tony Domek is son of Adam Domek, b. 14 Feb. 1844 in Poland, d. 19 April 1925 at Spirit Lake, Dickinson Co., IA and Barbara Zeigman, b. 1845 Germany, d. unknown. I have Adam and Barbara being married at Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., WI. I just heard from another researcher named Marge on Feb. 24th: Mjmicona@aol.com She says they were married in East Bristol, Dane Co., WI in St. Joseph's Catholic Church by Father Debecker, instead of at Beaver Dam. I don't know which is correct. I heard from another researcher, Barbara McDonald paxriverbarb@hotmail.com, on 24 Nov. 2003. She gives this information on the Adam Domek family: Adam Domek served in the Civil War, and homesteaded a farm near Fairville upon his return from the Civil War. He married Barbara Zeigman at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Their children were: Joseph, born 24 Sept. 1866 Henry, born 7 Jan. 1868 Barbara born, 20 Mar. 1870, Beaver Dam, WI, married Fred C. Miller 19 Nov. 1890, died 20 April 1964, Whittemore, IA George born 11 Dec. 1871 Mary born 8 Jan. 1873 Edmond born 14 May 1876 John born 24 Aug. 1878, married Emma Benson, died Feb 12, 1960, buried in Alexandria, MN. They had 12 children Anthony born, 7 Nov. 1880 Michael born 2 Nov. 1882 ? (not sure of the year). He was deaf and dumb, and lived his life with John. Fred born, 6 Mar. 1884 , married Clara Gappa 18 April 1906, died Nov. 1982, Fenton, IA Frank born, 16 May 1885 or 86. Maybe you can contact these other two researchers and get some answers. P.S. I also have a William Joseph Domek (1891-1964) who married Margaret Voigt (1901-1984), who was another cousin of my dad's. How is William Joseph Domek related to Adam Domek? --Glenn Gohr archives_guy@hotmail.com

    1. [WIDODGE] DOMEK, DOMINICK, DOMINIK 1850-1870
    2. Marilyn Mugan Holmes
    3. This is my first venture with this list. Am seeking information on my gggrandparents who settled in the Beaver Dam area from Poland-Germany in approximately 1850. Various census takers have spelled the name DOMEK, DOMINICK, DOMINIK. The parents may have been named Michael and Hedwiga or Ludwiga. Their two children were named Adam (age 6) and Mary (about 10 years older). Story is told that the elder Michael was digging graves in a cholera outbreak in about 1856, and fell over dead into an open grave, also a cholera victim. In the 1860 census, Adam is listed as a 15 year old farm laborer, living with his widowed mother at an address in the town of Beaver Dam. The sister, Mary, is assumed to have married a farmer, George KLIEGL(E) also spelled EIGLE in one census, about 25 years her senior. Adam volunteered for service in the Civil War‹Wisconsin 17th Infantry Regiment. Married to Barbara ZEIGMAN, after discharge from the War. (June 1866). Michael¹s widow, Hedwiga or Ludwiga, possibly died in 1867. The 1870 census show the young Adam DOMEK and George KLIEGL families living on adjoining farms in rural York, WI. They migrated to NW Iowa shortly thereafter (1871-72). I¹ve written to county officials, was told the courthouse burned down‹a common occurance. I¹ve written to the Madison Diocese for church records; was told they don¹t exist. I¹ve tried to check on newspapers, but have run into dead ends for that 1850-1870 time period. I would really like to know a bit about the immigration, death or marriage records, land records, anything that would tell exactly where these folks emigrated from. Is there some kind soul who can offer more suggestions? Thanks in advance, Marilyn Mugan Holmes

You could rent census filmstrips and other info. How about the 1880 Census at www.familysearch.org? Hope this helps, Jane
