    1. Re: [WIDMANN] Johann (John) Widmann/Christine Nagy
    2. WOW! You will not believe what I have for you! And how wierd this is. Johann emigrated on the SS Bremen arriving in NY on 10 June 1869 - he was 4 (born in 1864 in Zuffenhausen (now part of Stutgart). His full name was Johann Gottlob and on the passenger list he is listed as Gottlob. He traveled with his brother Johann Heinrich 6 (born 1863) and his father Johann Gottlob 41. His mother had died in 1868. His parents had had eight children: Maria Magdalena (1856-1856), Johann Gottlob (1859-1860), Johann Heinrich (b. 1863), Jakob Friderich (1867-1867), Jakob Friderick (1857-1869) Gottlob (1861-1862) Johann Gottlob (b. 1864) and Katherina (1868-1868). The mother's name was Catherina Siegel. After Gottlob arrived, he married again, and had another daughter Mary, born 1871. He chose Dubuque because his two older brothers lived there. First to emigrate was Fred (the younger of the two older brothers). Fred Widmann emigrated on 21 August 1854 on the SS Lamont from Havre to NY. On his passenger list, he was planning to settle in Oswego, NY. However, he turns up in Dubuque in December 1854 getting remarried (his wife had died and left him with two young children). He married Veronica and has several more children. Then my ancestor, oldest brother Conrad Widmann (b. 1815, died 1877), his wife Catherine, and their seven children emigrate on the SS Bellona, Havre to NY arriving 31 May 1867. They also go to Dubuque, but in 1870 move to Waterloo when the Railroad moves their shops there. I have for you: passenger list with Johann, German church records (they are all microfilmed), and census data - I see in 1900 in Dubuque, John is 36 (and a lumber inspector-car repairer?), Christine is 36, and there is 10 year old Madeline (born Jun 1889), 8 year old Henrietta (born March 18920, 2 year old John Lewis (born March 1898) and baby Hilda, just born in May. You can email me directly at [email protected] And - for the weird coincidence - I married Peter Nagy!
