    1. [WIDMANN] ARTHUR - WIDMAN Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Bobby ARTHUR which was taken at the J. W. Byam Studio in Ellendale, ND in the 1890's when Bobby was just an infant. Bobby is identified as "Alex's boy" and "buried in the cemetery here in ND". Based on limited research I believe Bobby's father was Alexander D. ARTHUR and have gathered the following information regarding Bobby and his family: Robert "Bobby" G. ARTHUR was b. 20 Jan 1893 and died 26 Apr 1907 and is buried in the Ellendale City Cemetery in Ellendale, ND. His father was Alexander Daniel ARTHUR b. 1860 to Robert C. ARTHUR (1832-1896) and Nancy DOWNEY (1839-1919). Alexander was one of 7 children born to this couple including, Clara E.; Alexander Daniel; Major A.; Frank H.; Elmer B.; Maggie; and Loyal ARTHUR all born between 1859 and 1878. Alexander married Carrie WIDMAN. Census records provide the following details: 1900 census of Ada, ND: Alexander D. ARTHUR, age 40, born Dec 1859, married 13 years, born MI, parents born NJ/MI, a Farmer Carrie ARTHUR, wife, age 36, born Jan 1864, married 13 years, 3 children/3 living, born MI, parents born Germany Nannie M. ARTHUR, dau, age 13, born Aug 1887, born ND, at School Alta M. ARTHUR, dau, age 12, born Nov 1888, born ND, at School Robert A. G. ARTHUR, son, age 7, born Jan 1893, born ND, at School I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photograph can be returned to your care. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Better now than Never.Jakob, actually born Johann Jakob Left what is now Ukraine, traveled to Antwerp Belgium and boarded the "MONTREAL" for Quebec. At some point he entered the us on 06/16/1907., possibly while traveling on Lake Erie. He is then found on the ship Lake Michigan and reentering the US on 06/24/1907. Between that date and 05/1912, he is traveling toward ND. I have no record of his travel there and cannot be sure how and when he got there, but one thing is sure: He crossed the border from Canada into Portal ND in May of 1912. Had he been in the area for a while, left and came back... or did in travel over the 5 years through Canada and settled in ND at that time? I do not have the answer. Jakob was the 10th child of a family of 12. His Father was Jakob Woellhaf ("o" with an Umlaout) born in Lichtental on 07/23/1843, who, himself was the oldest son of Gottfried, born on 10/02/1818 in Schnait, WU-Germany and of Christine Tsc! heck born in 1820 in Malojaroslawetz, Ukraine. Gottfried'father was also named Gottfried and was born ca 1795 in Schnait. Schnait is a small village East of Stuttgart in the Wine region, the craddle of the Woellhaff and many other spelling of the same name. I am working on a genealogy project the goes back to 1540, out of the same area and spread worldwide. It is quite interesting. 1. [WIDMANN] Widmann - Name Origin?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: robwid Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.widmann/73/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Widmann: Origin of the name? The work of Cologne University Professor Walter Pfeilsticket needs to be taken into account on this subject. The surname Widmann arose, Pfeilsticker claimed, when a certain Mangolt of Dagersheim, Wuerttemberg was awarded the town Widdemhof, a barn/stable structure, as a fief circa 1300. Those who controlled or managed the income from the Widdemhof were known as Widdemeyer or Widdman. The ancient Daggersheim Widdemhof may still stand and may be viewed on the internet at Zeitriese bb,de/widdemhof. The term "widdemhof" refered originally to a structure where male animals were kept segregated or reserved in order to manage flock or herd size and there is further thought that the root of the term - wid - refers back to the sense of the ram (Widder) as a repeating force/activity as do many other words in the German language having a wid component (wider - contra, against; widerhall - echo, etc.). The term "Widmen" means dedication deriving perhaps from a sense of a prepetual return to an object, activity or frame of mind. In Wuerttemberg of the middle ages, the term Widdemhof had come to mean a farm or farm structures reserved for church use, usually to provide income and support for the church and its pastor. However, in Daggersheim as in many other towns in Wuerttemberg, the Widdemhof referred specifically to a structure used as a place for villagers and for farmers nearby to deposit church tithe (zehntscheuer) obligations: so many measures of wheat, of barley, of hay, etc. But as church pastors became political appointees, the income stream of the tithe barn, the Widdemhof, was often diverted to other village "patriziat" ranked higher than pastor by the King or warlord of the region who made such appointments. This state of affairs and other similar abuses was to lead in 1524 to the Peasants Rebellion, wherein peasant leaders demanded, among other things, a right to choose Church Pastors, and as noted by Frederick Engels, the red flag was to fly for the first time. But it was this Widdemhof in Daggersheim that was awarded by Count Eberhard, Erlaucht, to a certain village mayor named Mangolt as a fief, an income property, that was to be associated with Mangolt's name, first as Widdemaier and then as Widdemann and that became associated as a surname with his offspring and, in turn, with their descendants over the centuries. Professor Pfeilstecker further claims Mangolt Widdemann was an illegitimate son of Count Eberhard and a servant girl, but provides nothing in the way of proof of this. But perhaps this account is so as, over the years, members of the Widmann Clan turn up as oficially favored local leaders: in Ehningen (1525), Hans Widmann presumptive father of Lienhard (1606) is Village Shultheiss, Claus Widmann in Gueltlingen, Konrad and Mangold in Marbach and Steinheim (from which George von Widmann of Eger and Widmann-Sedlntzky family may have emerged). A different derivation than the one above is given by commercial sellers of family crests. Below - purported origin of name, "Widemann, widmann" from HOUSE OF NAMES: The Wideman surname is derived from the Upper German word "weide," meaning "willow." Thus it was most likely a name originally taken on by someone who lived near a willow tree. First found in the Palatinate in the Rhineland valley, where the name was anciently associated with the tribal conflicts of the area.(Would like to know more about this -.RHW) Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Johannes Widmann, who came to Philadelphia in 1743; along with Franz Carl in 1772; and Michael Widmann in 1748; Johann Friedrich Widman came to Philadelphia in 1749. www.houseofnames.com /xq/asp/s.Wideman/Origin.GR/sId./qx/coatofarms_details.htm Other sources attribute the name origin to the nordic w(j)d, the (j) being a runic vowel similar to i or u and together the w(j)d being the stem for the english word, wood, hence the name Widmann has as its meaning, woodsman. My note - The 3 grapes cluster motif appearing in many Widmann family crests is exactly the 3 grape cluster arrangement that appears in the coat of arms of the Nekar Valley town of Weinsburg as well as that of Inglostadt and appears in the painting of Carlo Aurelio Widmann, Admiral of the Venetian Fleet, ca. 1798 and in the portrait engraving of Erasmus Widmann ca. 1610.
