    1. Re: [WIDMANN] Johann (John) Widmann/Christine Nagy
    2. WOW! You will not believe what I have for you! And how wierd this is. Johann emigrated on the SS Bremen arriving in NY on 10 June 1869 - he was 4 (born in 1864 in Zuffenhausen (now part of Stutgart). His full name was Johann Gottlob and on the passenger list he is listed as Gottlob. He traveled with his brother Johann Heinrich 6 (born 1863) and his father Johann Gottlob 41. His mother had died in 1868. His parents had had eight children: Maria Magdalena (1856-1856), Johann Gottlob (1859-1860), Johann Heinrich (b. 1863), Jakob Friderich (1867-1867), Jakob Friderick (1857-1869) Gottlob (1861-1862) Johann Gottlob (b. 1864) and Katherina (1868-1868). The mother's name was Catherina Siegel. After Gottlob arrived, he married again, and had another daughter Mary, born 1871. He chose Dubuque because his two older brothers lived there. First to emigrate was Fred (the younger of the two older brothers). Fred Widmann emigrated on 21 August 1854 on the SS Lamont from Havre to NY. On his passenger list, he was planning to settle in Oswego, NY. However, he turns up in Dubuque in December 1854 getting remarried (his wife had died and left him with two young children). He married Veronica and has several more children. Then my ancestor, oldest brother Conrad Widmann (b. 1815, died 1877), his wife Catherine, and their seven children emigrate on the SS Bellona, Havre to NY arriving 31 May 1867. They also go to Dubuque, but in 1870 move to Waterloo when the Railroad moves their shops there. I have for you: passenger list with Johann, German church records (they are all microfilmed), and census data - I see in 1900 in Dubuque, John is 36 (and a lumber inspector-car repairer?), Christine is 36, and there is 10 year old Madeline (born Jun 1889), 8 year old Henrietta (born March 18920, 2 year old John Lewis (born March 1898) and baby Hilda, just born in May. You can email me directly at [email protected] And - for the weird coincidence - I married Peter Nagy!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AYWBAIB/46 Message Board Post: I am seeking any info on Johann (John) Widmann, a German immigrant and, at some point, a conductor on the Milwaukee railroad. John m. Christine Nagy, (b. 1864 in IA probably in the Dubuque area). Christine's parents names are unknown, but dad was born in Austria and mom in Switzerland. Christine had at least two sisters, Lida and (?), both allegedly were dwarves. John and Christine married in the late 1800's in Dubuque, IA. They had three natural children, Magdalen Josephine, (my g-gma, b. 14 Jun 1886 in Dubuque, IA, d, Sep 1973 in Helena, MT) Louis, and Henrietta. They also had an adopted daughter, Hilda Van Buren Lappin, (who eventually became the personal secretary to Harry Bridges, the organizer of the Longshoreman's Union). John and Christine emigrated to eastern Montana and homesteaded sometime prior to 1920, as they are enumerated on the 1920 Custer County census with my g-gma, Magdalen, and her two children (my gma) Mabel and Leo. I have lots of descendent info, but no info on John or Christine or their parents. Anything would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

    1. Re: [WIDMANN] Gottlob/Gottlieb Widmann
    2. In response to: - - - - - - - - - - - Looking for any info on Gottlob/Gottlieb Widmann, born about 1858/59 in Germany; married Kathrina Christina Rudolph, 4 Oct 1884 in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri. Drowned 23 Oct 1884 in Brownington, Henry, Missouri. 1 child, Mary Martha Widmann, born 18 Jun 1885 in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri. Any info would be deeply appreciated. - - - - - - - - - - - - I have some information on a Gottlieb Widmann, but I am not sure it is your Gottlieb. My Gottlieb was born in Zuphenhausen, Germany (now a suburb of Stuttgart) in about 1865, son of Johann Gottlieb Widmann (and Catherine Siegel who died in 1868). Johann (b 6 Nov 1827) and his two sons - Heinrich (b 1863) and Gottlieb immigrated on 6/10/1869 on the SS Bremen through New York, and went immediately to Dubuque Iowa to join Johann's two brothers who had previously immigrated (Fred in 1854 and Conrad in 1867). Johann was the 11th child of Jacob Friedrich Widmann and Madalena Pfisterer. Six of their 12 children died before age 2, and one at age 22 (two babies were twins). I am not sure if the two surviving daughters emigrated, but the three sons did, all to Dubuque. After arriving in Dubuque, Johann remarried. He died in Dubuque on 8 Oct 1888 and is buried in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. I only offer this information because when I did a search on the 1880 census for a Gottlieb/Gottlob Widmann/Whitman I came up with no one that matches either of ours! Do you have any more information to see if this would match up? He would have only been about 19/20 upon the marriage and his death, so perhaps this is not a likely match. I am descended from Johann's brother Conrad, and only know so much about Johann because I have been researching why the Widmann's emigrated, and why to Dubuque. You can email me directly, and not "clutter" up the list with details, if you wish. I have census data, Ship Lists and German church records should this turn out to be a match. Donna Hay

    1. [WIDMANN] Family Bible
    2. My Widmann family bible was lost/stolen in Wisconsin in 1988/1989. It dates from the 1870's, and is likely a St. James version, in German. It belonged to Elizabeth Krieger and William Widmann, married in 1872 in Waterloo Iowa. It is very large, placemat-sized, leather binding with large gold scrolls on the front. It contains my family genealogy and pictures. It was last seen in a hospital in Eau Claire Wisconsin in 1988 or in a nursing home in Whitewater Wisconsin in 1989. I am more than willing to pay to retrieve it. If the current owner is unwilling to part with it, I would love to make a copy of it for our family. We just are hoping very much that it still exists. Please contact me with any information. Thank you for any help in this matter. Sincerely, Donna Hay (Elizabeth Krieger and William Widmann's great-granddaughter)
