    3. Torture Trio Gets One to Three Years — Dresen and Greiber Given Extra Year for Wearing Masks Sentences of one to three years in the state reformatory in Green Bay were imposed Tuesday afternoon on John Dresen, Jr., Elmer Greiber, and Norbert Theis for the attempted "torture" robbery of Mike Lenertz (sic), Roxbury storekeeper. In addition, Dresen and Greiber were given sentences of not less than a year for wearing when they entered the store and poured hot water on Lenertz's (sic) legs to make him divulge the whereabouts of his money. Weep Over Sentences The three 22-year old bandits all wept when Judge Roy H. Proctor, of superior court, pronounced sentence upon them. The additional sentences for Greiber and Dresen will run concurrently with the sentence for robbery. The charge against them was assault with intent to rob while armed with a dangerous weapon. Pleads for Theis Pleading mitigating circumstances for Theis, Lawrence W. Hall, Madison attorney, pointed out that he had had a good reputation in the community before he was arrested, according to the testimony of a number of neighbors. William Treichel, assistant district attorney, scouted the idea advanced by Theis on the stand that he did not know there was a gun in the car or that he did not know the exact purpose of the trip. Judge Proctor refused to change the charge against Theis so as to make him an accessory instead of a principal. Mrs. Matt Theis, mother of Norbert, took the stand in the afternoon to tell the court she had never had any trouble with her son until he was arrested for this crime. H. A. Lochner, an uncle, and Raymond Schaachte (sic), a neighbor, also took the stand for the boy. Dresen and Greiber were not represented by attorneys and made no attempt to bring in witnesses.
