He is one of our Civil War Vets buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Everett, WA Henry Goodenow gives several dates of birth throughout his life on pension he says 11/16/1840 and does not give place, on a paper presented to pension board was a bible note of the family giving Henry birth as 11/26/1838 and notarized still no place. On declaration for pension he said 11/6/1838 but still no place, he joined the Civil War from Madison, Dane Co. WI and he was found there in 1860 1860 Madison, Dane Co., WI Henry Goodnow 1843/NY a journeyman Blacksmith is living with the Caylon & Emeline Olney family who had a blacksmith shop in town. 1860 Van Buren, Wayne Co. MI Norman Ellis 1821/NY dentist, Alma 1830/VT, Buell 1842/OH, Harriett 1845/MI, Alma 1850/WI, Emna 1853/WI, Lecta 1855/WI, Fredrick 1858/IN. The Ellis family is in Madison, Dane Co. WI by 1870 census with more children Eugene 1861/MI, Lanlie 1863/MI, Edward 1865/WI. (this would be Alma Goodnow nee Ellis parents) Henry Goodenow joined 23rd WI Infantry Co A, giving residence as Madison, WI and was discharge as private 7/4/1865 in Mobile, AL. He requested pension from this service in 1879 from Dane Co. WI Henry Goodenow married Alma E. Ellis 3/20/1869 in Dane Co. WI 1870 Montrose, Dane Co. WI Henry Goodenow (spelled Goodnow) 1843/NY Blacksmith, Alma 1850/WI, Norman 4/12/WI and living with them is a Charles W. Goodenow 1853/WI blacksmith apprentice. >From a bible page given to pension board the dates for the children births are Norman H. 1/21/1870, George E. 3/8/1871, Florence Hattie 3/21/1873, Blanch A. 1/26/1875, 1880 Montrose, Dane Co. WI Henry Goodenow (spelled Goodmough) 1843/WI Blacksmith parents born Germany, Alma 1851/WI, Norman 1870/WI, George 1871/WI, Florence 1873/WI, Blanch 1875/WI also living with them is a Wm. Buddy 1853/Prussia blacksmith. 1900 Bellevill, Dane Co. WI Henry Goodenow Post Master 11/1843/Denmark, Alma 11/1853/WI says had 4 children 4 living, George 3/1873/WI single, clerk at PO, Florence 3/1875/WI single clerk at PO, Blanche 1/1877/WI single clothing. Note here again different birth date and place of birth. NY or Denmark 1910 North Prosser, Benton Co. WA Henry Goodenow Henry 1843/WI farmer married once says parents born in Denmark and dose note he is Union Army, Alma A. 1853/WI 4 ch 4 liv, George E. 1873/WI single farmer, Florence 1875/WI single. Henry Goodenow died 4/29/1915 at his son home Dr. Norman H. Goodenow and noted as rancher/Machinist born NY and noted father as Christian Hallier from Denmark and that mother was also born Denmark. Says he is 74 years old and married. 1920 Los Angles CA Earnest C. Carpenter 37, Florence 42, (this is Henry & Alma daughter), Blanche 6, also living with the Carpenter family is Alma Goodenow age 67 widow b/WI. Alma applied for 1920 Everett, Snohomish Co. WA DR. Norman H. Goodenow age 49/WI physcian, Mable F. 44/WI, Curtis H. 22 single b/IA and a life insurance agent. (this is Henry & Alma son whom buried him in 1915) Everett Daily Herald 4/1915 Henry Goodenow, aged 74 years, died this morning at the home of his son, Dr. Norman H. Goodenow, 4204 Colby ave. He leaves a wife, two sons, Dr. Goodenow and George E. Goodenow of North Yakima, and a daughter, Mr. Ernest E. Carpenter (Florence b/1878 of Los Angeles. He was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted in Company A, Twenty-third Wisconsin volunteers, and was a member of the G.A.R. post at North Yakima. The funeral, under the direction of N.B. Challacombee, will be held from the home, 4204 Colby ave., Saturday morning at 22 o'clock. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, where the G.A.R. will conduct the service.
