The Evangelicals built a church at the top of the hill (a small cemetary is still there) just north of Hope. It was abandoned in 1910 or so and torn down for the lumber. Interestingly, the denomination had some sort of split in the late 1860's and half the members left to worship at a church building they bought from the Methodists a couple of miles north in Vilas (there's still a small cemetery there on Cottage Grove Road). For what every reason, in the early 1900's they put that building on rollers and very slowly moved it into Cottage Grove. The Evangelicals then disbanded in the late 1920 and that church was torn down not long afterwards. The two small congregations were never big enough to support their own preacher and were always were served by someone from Madison or even Arlington at the end. This is all off the top of my head, so some to the dates may be wrong, but you get the general idea. Sandy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
