Named after her grandmother: Mary Jane McNerney Sullivan (James Edward Sullivan). Moved to Madison, WI 1924. Lived at 2229 Eton Ridge, attended Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and Madison West High School. Graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Wisconsin in 1941. Member of Alpha Chi Omega. Mary Jane taught at Madison West High School (from which she graduated in 1937) for two years and resigned in June, 1943 to marry Edward Arthur (Ned) Grede of Wauwatosa, WI. Besides her husband, she is survived by sons Richard (Alyce) of Hobe Sound, FL, Donald (Terri) of Lafayette, CO, Robert of Wauwatosa, WI and daughter, Elizabeth Bowling (Daniel III) of Atlanta, GA, grandchildren Nathan, Cameron, Helen Grede and Daniel IV, Edward and Elizabeth Bowling. She is also survived by a brother Dr. Robert Samp (Susie) of Englewood, FL, two sisters, Helen Filkins of Cape Canaveral, FL, and Virginia Knaplund (Paul) of Falmouth, MA and St. John, VI, and many nephews, nieces and friends. She is predeceased by brother Edward Samp (Mary) formerly of Cambridge, MA. She was active in community affairs for many years, and served on the boards of the Salvation Army, Alverno College, The Milwaukee Symphony Women's League and the Florentine Opera Club. Mary Jane and Ned served as General Chairmen of the 1964 Milwaukee Symphony Ball, and of the 1968 Florentine Opera Ball. In 1961, she and two friends founded a travel agency in the village of Elm Grove, WI (where she lived with her family for 35 years). In 1972, she founded Grede World Travel Service. She and Ned traveled throughout the world. Mary Jane also wrote travel articles for Exclusively Yours magazine and spoke at churches and women's clubs. She retired in 1993 to spend winters in Hobe Sound, Florida and summers on Beaver Lake near Hartland. She was a member of St. Clare's (now Blessed Theresa of Calcutta) Church of North Lake, St. Christopher's of Hobe Sound, Chenequa Country Club, Lost Lake Golf Club, and Willoughby Country Club. The family will receive friends on Monday, Jan. 14th from 4 until 7 at Becker Funeral Home, 14075 West North Avenue, Brookfield, WI. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Clare's (Blessed Theresa of Calcutta) Church, Hwy 83 North Lake, WI at 11am Tuesday, Jan. 15th followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to St. Clare's Church, St. Christopher's Church, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, or Food for the Poor, Inc. 550 SW 12th Ave, Deerfield Beach, FL 33442.
