Are you sure he lived and died in Dane County? In Ancestry's newspapers online there is a report on the page 1 of the Manitowac WI newspaper Jan 16, 1961 that says: "John B. Scheer 70, Milwaukee, was injured fatally Sunday night when struck by an automobile on Milwaukee's west side." Sunday would have been 15 Jan 1961. In the WWI draft registration there is a John Benj.
