Obituary of John Wall. Mazomanie Sickle Friday, May 3, 1901 Page 1 Reel P28305 Wisconsin State Historical Society John Wall, one of the pioneers of Dane County, died Monday afternoon at about 5 o'clock at his home in this place. The deceased, who was 94 years old, had spent the latter half of his life in this country and had been identified with all the progressive movements made by the community in which he lived. He was an extensive land owner and had accumulated a snug fortune out of the various business enterprises he was interested in, among others being a grist mill at Black Earth. He retired from business several years ago owing to old age and had been confined to his bed for months. He was born in Chatham England July 24, 1807 and came to this country in 1838 locating in Dane County during the same year. As a boy in England he was employed as a clerk in a bank. He married his wife in the old country, though he has been a widower for the last 12 years, and never had any children. Since the death of Mrs. Wall, he has lived with a niece of his wife, Mrs. John A. Adams. He has one sister, Mrs. Charlotte Rudd, in England and two nephews, William Wall of Cazenovia, Wisconsin and George Wall, living in Iowa. His estate is variously estimated at from $100,000 to $200,000 and it is understand that in his will he has provided bountifully for Mrs. Adams and her family and then arranged for the rest of his fortune to go to the children of his dead sisters and brothers and to Mrs. Rudd, his only living sister. The funeral took place Thursday afternoon at Black Earth, Rev. Dr. Stoddart officiating. ----- Original Message ----- From: <plc2453@hotmail.com> To: <WIDANE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 14, 2006 5:57 PM Subject: [WIDANE] John & Mary Bennett Wall- Black Earth > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Wall, Bennett > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WFC.2ACI/3100 > > Message Board Post: > > Does anyone have access to an obit for John Wall b. 24 July 1807 England; > died 29 Apr 1901 Black Earth. Obit for Seth Snyder >From the Stoughton Courier Hub P45581 Thursday, April 2, 1931 Page 1 Seth Snyder, 70, Dies Following Long Illness Was Waterworks Superintendent for Almost 35 years Seth Snyder, 70, died at the community hospital this morning, following an illness of several weeks duration. Mr. Snyder had been in poor health since the death of his wife some months ago. >From the standpoint of length of service to the city, Mr. Snyder was the dean of city employees. Appointed as superintendent of the city waterworks department in 1897, Mr. Snyder would have completed 34 years in that position on the 14th day of this month. Previous to his appointment as superintendent he had served in other capacities. Although one of the oldest superintendents in the state, Mr. Snyder was continually complimented by officers in other cities as being one of the most modern officials because of his keeping in touch with all progress made in his line of work. Under his control the city waterworks has grown from a small struggling unit to an efficiently managed organization which has shown increasing profits through the past years. Mayor Pays Tribute When hearing of Mr. Snyder's death early today, Mayor A.E. Skinner said, "In the death of Mr. Snyder the city loses a most faithful worker, a good citizen and a fine friend.. His position as superintendent can be filled by another man, but no one can take "Seth's place in the hearts of his host of friends." Old Resident of Stoughton Records show that Mr. Snyder's parents came to Stoughton from Augusburg, New York. Mr. Snyder was born in Stoughton on May 13 (could be 15) 1861, thus he would have celebrated his 70th birthday next month. He has spent practically his entire life in this community. Surviving him are one brother, Gustave Snyder and one daughter, Frances. Funeral services for Mr. Snyder will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at 2 o'clock from the First M.E. Church. The Rev. W. Harold Sloane will officiate and burial will be in Riverside. Halverson and Ford are in charges of arrangements. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mw4au@aol.com> To: <WIDANE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 10, 2006 3:02 PM Subject: [WIDANE] Stoughton Currier Hub obit lookup > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Snyder > Classification: Lookup > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WFC.2ACI/3125 > > Message Board Post: > > Would someone be able to lookup and copy an obit in the Stoughton Currier > Hub for > > Mr. G. Here is his updated info: LeRoy Bunn was born in 1843 in Dix, Schuyler (which was Chemung - some say Oneida) County, New York and died in 1900 in Burns Township, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin; he married Sarah C. Streeton who was born in 1843 in Burns Township, La Crosse County, Wisconsin and died in 1934 in Burns Township, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin; both are buried in the Burns Cemetery, Burns Township, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin; married December 13, 1869 in LaCrosse County, Wisconsin. The 1860 Census for Buena Vista, Richland County, Wisconsin shows a son living with Samuel and Sarah Bunn age 17 years. LeRoy then served in the Twenty-fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry enlisting in February 24, 1864, after which he engaged in agricultural work in Trempealeau County until he went to work for the Sawyer and Austin Lumber Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin, being mentioned as a valued employee and one of the highly respected pioneers of La Crosse County (pub. 1892). In the 1880 Census Leroy Bunn, wife Sara! h, and son Irving (4 b. WI) are living in Phillips County, Kansas. The Civil War Pension Index lists Leroy with widow Sarah S. being an invalid on November 23, 1883 and her widowed on July 19, 1900; the 1890 Veteran Schedule shows Leroy back in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. Although he claimed Sally as his mother, she was probably his stepmother, according to family history. Sarah Streeton Bunn was the daughter of: William Streeton who was born in 1818 and died in 1895 in Burns Township, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin and Sarah who was born in 1820 and died in 1896 in Burns Township, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin; both are buried in the Burns Cemetery, Burns Township, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin – both were old and valued residents of Burns Township. LeRoy and Sarah Bunn had one son: 1) Irving J. Bunn born September 24, 1874 in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin died November 25, 1915 in LaCrosse County, Wisconsin aged 41 years, 2 months and 1 day – buried Oak Grove Cemetery, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin. According to Ancestry.com's WI marriages pre-1907 Siroy (betcha dollars to doughnuts that's a mistranscribed Leroy) married Sarah Streeton 13dec1869 in La Crosse Co. WI. That explains the extra Sarah that everyone lists in their trees. In the 1880 census, there is a Sarah and William Streeton living in Burns Twp., La Crosse Co. WI and I'm thinking these are her folks. Leroy Bunn, wife Sarah, and son Irving (4 b. WI) are living in Phillips Co. KS. The 1890 Veteran Schedule shows Leroy back in La Crosse Co. WI. The Civil War Pension Index lists Leroy with widow Sarah S. being an invalid on 23nov1883 and her widowed on 19jul1900 (fits with his headstone pix). Hope this helps fill in some blanks. Deb :)
