The 1855 marriage records for Dane County show a William Olsen was married October 30, 1855. Volume 2, page 285. A cross index for possible spouse matches lists the wife as Ann Olsen. These marriage records may or may not show the names of the parents. I would have to look at the actual copy of the certificate on the microfilm at the state library. Her surname could well also be Olsen but that does not mean her father's surname is Olsen when you consider the Norwegian system of naming their children. This also assumes that this William and Ann are the same two persons listed below. The first Norwegian settler came to Koshkonong in 1839 and by 1844 almost 800 had come. The first Norwegian minister arrived from Norway. Go to this website to see this information: http://wisconsinhistory.org/wlhba/articleView.asp?pg=2&orderby=&id=8256&pn=1&key=Koshkonong&cy= Click back one page to see a picture of the church. I live near Madison but am not real familiar with the Stoughton churches but I believe the first early church there was a Universalist and the Norwegians started out in the Koshkonong church. There is also an article pertaining to the West Koshkonong Church at: http://wisconsinhistory.org/wlhba/articleView.asp?pg=1&id=8279&key=Koshkonong&cy= which is Norwegian. If Wilhelm lived to the 1900 census it would have shown what year he came here. Did you try for a death certificate for Wilhem in Minnesota or an obit? There is a Wisconsin state census for 1855 which I believe was taken before October, but this census only lists the head of the household and the number or other occupants, no names. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stanley M. Surnames: Johnson, Tilley, Peterson Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.dane/5652/mb.ashx Message Board Post: OBITUARY Mrs. Henry Tilley Gertrude Christiana (Johnson) Tilley was born June 28, 1853 at Lolland Denmark, died at her home at Brooklyn, Aug. 9, after a long illness which she bore patiently till the end. Now a place is vacant in our home which never can be filled. Day by day we saw you fade and gently pass away, yet we prayed that you might longer stay. If love and care could death prevent thy days would not so soon be spent. Life was desired but God did see Eternal rest was best for thee. Mrs. Tilley was baptised also confirmed at Lolland, Denmark, where she grew to girlhood and was married to Henry W. Tilley, April 16, 1879, coming to America the same year. They came to Brooklyn Township and made it their home, living at this place until called to the great Beyond. She was one of the early pioneers and knew the hardships of those days. To this union seven children were born two having passed away, Charles and William. Charles at the age of 12 and William at 21. Mrs. Tilley celebrated her 74th birthday June 28, she stating at the time that she had a happy birthday. Mrs. Tilley lived a long and peaceful life, always living for the comfort of all, she was always ready to help the sick and needy, Mrs. Tilley always loved her home, she was dearly loved by all who knew her, she longed to get well, but still she was ready to go when the Lord called her. "Rev." Erlander of Oregon conducted the services at the Brooklyn church where her many friends gathered to pay their last respect to the friend they loved so well, she was laid to rest at the Mount Hope Cemetery. The pall bearers were P. K. Hanson, Martin Mason, Charles Mortenson, Charley Hanson, John Hanson and Hans Knutson. She leaves to mourn her loss her husabnd, her five children, Johanna Louisa, Arthur, Nettie and Henry also seventeen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and an aged aunt Caroline Peterson. It is sad that one we cherish should be taken from our home but the joys that do not perish live in memory alone. Weep not that her toils are over weep not that her race is run, God grant we may rest as calmly when our work on earth is done, till then we yield from gladness our mother for him to keep and rejoice in the sweet assurance he giveth his loved one sleep. De havde da to børn: Amund og Anna. Klaus Godskalkson Meland, som agtede at udvandre i 1837, var kanske deres søn ogsaa. Amund blev gift i Dane county, Wis., med Orlog Olsdatter Løken, Vossestranden, og flyyede til Goodhue county, Minnesota. Anna blev gift med Lars T. Gjesme og flyttede med foræaldrene til Iowa. They settled after their arrival in 1844 on a farm in vicinity of what later would be Stoughton, where they bought land, built and lived until well out into the 1850, when they sold the farm and moved to Allamakee County, Iowa. Amund was married in Dane County, WI, with Orlog Olsdatter Løken, Vossestrand, and moved to Goodhue County, MN. Anna was married to Lars T. Gesme and moved with the parents to Iowa. Later they all moved to Goodhue County, MN. >From page 414 of the same book: "Godskalk Amundson Meland og svigersønnen Lars Gjesme kom til Allamakee county omkring 1854 fra Koshkonong. Godskalk Amundson Meland and his son-in-law Lars Gjesne came to Allamakee County about 1854 from Koshkonong. They later moved to Goodhue County, MN. I guess that's it.
