Author: MrsKirsten Surnames: Davis from Wisconsin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.dane/1661.1662/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello William Davis, How r u today? My name is Christina Davis Kirsten and after finding this message of your's I thought I would drop a line and say Hello. Your message also said something about a Davis from Dane County Wisconsin. Hurray, we have found eachother, I too am searching for anything about Davis' out of Wisconsin. It has been about 20 years that I have been searching for Grandpa Harry William Davis and his Family. I now have sources that back up my findings, unlike 20 years ago. I would like to add that William is a name that runs repeatedly in this brach of the Davis'. And that I had an Uncle Bill, my favorite Uncle, I miss him. Grandpa; Harry William Davis born Baldwin, St. Croix county, Wisconsin, June 20, 1890. Source; Montana Death Certificate, state file #67-2665, Address, 508 Williams Street, Miles City, MT. Also Standard Certificate of Birth(M.C.2332) for Harry Junior Davis born June 14, 1928 Miles City states that Harry William Davis(father) was born in Baldwin, Wisc. Florence L. Dickens(mother) was born in LeValle, Wisc. Certificate of Baptism For Harry William Davis starts; "This Certifies, That Harry William Davis of MADISON..., and ends with usages of the METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH. W.Wisconsin Conference. Feb. 18, 1917. Signed by a Rulufe A. Chase." Did Grandpa get Baptised before he went into the war? So this paper tells me grandpa was from Madison, at some point in his life. I have found the Dickens connection, they are all from Dane and Sauk counties. Grandma Florence's sister's daughter lives in Stoughton. Vera was grandma's sister, Kiever I believe is the daughter's name, Doris, that's her first name. Ray and Doris Bless their hearts for sending Christmas cards every year, that is how I found out about Doris. And then I found her in the Dickens papers I have, that was a great moment too. My Dickens papers state that; Harry William Davis married Florence L. Dickens April 9, 1916. Papers do not say where, but my guess would be Dane or Sauk county. Paper says this couple had 8 children. The ones I know of are as follows; Elanor May Davis born and died Wisconsin, 1917. Leonard William Davis, born April 20, 1919 in Miles City, Custer County, Montana. Died about 1972 in Dayton, Ohio. Married a lady by the name of Opal who was from Texas and she and the kids settled in Priest Rapids, Idaho. A son by the name of Buster Davis I would like to connect with. Daniel E. Davis born April 13, 1921. Died in the Portland, Oregon area about 2002. Hazel H. Davis(Harriet Henrietta Davis Reule born May 13, 1926. Died January 1991 in Bismarck, N. Dakota. Harry Junior Davis born June 14, 1928, lives in Spokane, Washington. This is my father. Harry Junior Davis mother died in Spokane, Washington Nov. 1961. William John Davis born January 26, 1930. Died in Idaho. August Isreal Davis born August 8, 1932. William John Davis was a twin, not sure what happened to him? Twin may have moved to Califonia, there was a death in the family that Uncle Bill and my dad went to, without any of us kids, so us cousins talking about it YEARS later find out. Harry Junior says that the twin was buried next to the house, but that the body was never found.?. Anyway there are the names of the children I know of and by my count there are 8. The first whom died in Wisconsin, Leonard, Daniel, Hazel, Harry, William and TWIN, and August. I too am a TWIN with the same story that the TWIN died at birth. Another thing is Harry William Davis was "farmed out" as a child. He may have had two brothers, Fred Wilford Davis and a James Davis, possibly a sister too. Helen may be her name. There was a Helen Davis living with a KIRCHER Family in Miles City about 1900. Al and Bertha KIRCHER. Helen was living with this family because her mother had died. There is a KIRCHER School around the corner from the farm my dad grew up on just outside of Miles City. I wonder if this Helen is the sister, and if this KIRCHER school has a connection to the KIRCHER family Helen was with? I have other info, if you want more info let me know. Thank You, Christina (mrskirsten) Where did Lyman move FROM? New York? Mass? Have a Great Day Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Several of the Himley brothers lived in Forest County, WI. Himley Lake in Forest County was named for one of them. My son and I camped and fished there when he was young and were living in Oak Park, IL. My grandfather, Edward Cornelius, was born in Dane County in 1877 and died in North Fond du Lac about 1950. Edward was a banker in Rice Lake, then, after a depression in the early twenties, became a station agent and telegrapher for the Soo Line. My father, one of the two grandchildren of Eric, Newman Edward Himley, was born in 1918 in Minneapolis and died here in Edgefield, SC in 1998. His father, Edward C., married Emma Benson when they were both middle aged. My father was their only child. He lived in Fond du Lac during is high school years. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1945. He married my mother, Anne Durisoe Day, of Trenton and Edgefield, SC in 1945. They had met while he was a JAG officer in the Army stationed at Anniston, Alabama, and she a nurse for the federal reserve bank of Atlanta. I was born in 1946 in Augusta, GA. I have one sister, Katharine Mims Nelson, born in 1950. She has three children and lives in Carrolton, GA. She is a nurse, as was my mother. Her oldest son is named Erick Anderson Dunlap. My father practiced law in the Midwest until his retirement in 1980. He and my mother retired then to Edgefield. He passed away in 1998 and my mother in 2003. I was married to Margaret Ruth Huenemann of Glenn Ellen, Illinois, in 1968. We lived in Fairbanks, AK, while I was stationed in the Army, then, after graduating from the University of Illinois, in the Chicago area. We were divorced in 1978. I moved to Edgefield in the early 1980s as I had joint custody of our only child, Matthew Day Himley, born in 1974, and I wanted him to be near his grandparents. He was valedictorian of the class of 1992 of Strom Thurmond High School, here in Edgefield County and graduated from Northwestern in 1998. (Edgefield was Strom's hometown.) He is now a doctoral candidate in Geography at Syracuse University. I am a counselor and Special Education teacher in Augusta, GA. I retire from teaching tomorrow. Susan's only child was a daughter, Mildred. I think she lived in Dane County. I think she is now dead, but do not know when she died. She and her husband lived on a farm and had children, but I can recall little of her, and only met her once. I'm writing this from memory. I have records packed away. When I find them and compile what you and the others have sent me, I will send you a more finished version. Thank you again for your help. Jim James E. I doubt that we are related, but I will tell you what I know of my family history. My GG grandfather was Anders Knutsen Himle, born in Norway 1820. I have learned from another researcher that the family farm was named "Himle" in the city of Voss. She told me that the 1901 postal guide (Norsk Stedsfortegnelse) shows a Himle farm in VOSS. A Norwegian told her that this farm is about 65 km from Bergen. ( I believe there is a photo online; I cld give you the citation if you want) I found a book at the Wisconsin Historical Society called "Norwegian Immigrants to the United Stats 1825-1843." Perhaps you can get it. It lists my GG grandfather as Anders, with patronymic of "Knutsen" and farm name of "Himle", city of Voss. I believe that Norwegian immigrants often took the name of their farm and used that as their last name. My GG grandfather Anders Himle had 6 children from two marriages. His son Ole Knutsen (Himle) was my GreatGrandfather. They moved to Grant county, Wisconsin in 1859. I saw a document from a local newspaper from 1899, stating that Oley Knutson changed his last name to "Himley" and from that point on he was known as "O.K. Himley." OK Himley and his wife had four sons: Nels Adolph, Gerhard, Ernest and Earl. Only two of them had children. Adolph had one son, who died in FLorida. Earl had one child, my mother, born in 1918 in Sparta, Wisconsin. Adolph's son was named Roland, don't know if there were children or not. Your son may indeed be the last of the line. He was born in 1930 in Norway and died in 1900. My grandfather, Edward Cornelius, was born in Dane County in 1877 and died in Fond du Lac about 1950. Of the nine children of Erick and Ellen, Edward and Susan were the only two to have children, one each. My father, one of the two, Newman Edward Himley, was born in 1918 in Minneapolis and died here in Edgefield, SC in 1998. My father told me that Erick Anderson was my great grandfather's original name, but he changed it so as not to be confused with another man of the same name. I have often wondered how he came to the name Hemle/Himle. In " Early Norwegian settlers on Koshkonong Prairie 1839-41", a man named ODD JOHANNESON HIMLE (Born: 15 Mar 1816; Died: 5 May 1893) is described as one of the earlier settlers in Dane County. There is also reference to a Himle farm in Voss, Norway. I have run across other Himleys but have no idea if my family is related. If not, my son, Matthew Himley, is the last of the line.
