I have been researching this McWatty family, because in the 1850 Federal Census of Greenfield Township, Dane County, Wisconsin, my ancestor James McBurney (born c. 1810-1820 in Ireland) is enumerated with William and Sarah McWatty and eight of their children. This biography leads me to believe that there could be a familial connection between James and Sarah. If anyone has any further information about Sarah Jane (McBurney) McWatty or James McBurney, please contact me. WHEN ABNER MARRIED HATTIE THEY HAD ONE SON HOWARD WHO MARRIED GLADYS, THEY ARE MY HUSBANDS GRANDPARENTS. I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT HATTIE'S MAIDEN NAME AND EVERYTHING ELSE YOU POSTED--THANKS BUNCHES. IN THE FAMILY BIBLE HATTIE'S LAST NAME WAS SCRIBBLED OUT. I DO HAVE A PICTURE OF ABNER DURING THE CIVIL WAR AND A SINGLE PICTURE OF HATTIE AND ONE WHERE SHE IS STANDING WITH HER MOTHER WHO LOOKS AND DRESSES INDIAN, BUT I NEVER KNEW WHICH TRIBE SHE WAS FROM. I AM STILL TRYING TO FIND WHICH TRIBE HATTIE IS FROM. I HAVE SEEN THE ORIGINAL COPY OF THOMAS SINGING A PIECE OF PAPER WHEN HE AND HIS TWO BOYS CAME INTO THE USA. HIS TWO BOYS ARE ABNER AND ISACC FLOOK. BUT I NEVER KNEW THOMAS FLOOK'S WIFE'S NAME, SO MANY THANKS. ABNER'S FIRST FAMILY HAD FRED, LULU AND I THINK 2 MORE SIBLINGS WHICH I HAVE A FAMILY PHOTO OF AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THOSE FROM ABNER'S FIRST FAMILY. I AM ALSO NOW FINDING OUT ABNER'S FIRST WIFE'S NAME AND SUCH. ARE YOU RELATED TO THOMAS FLOOK? ABNER FLOOK? ISACC FLOOK? I DO KNOW THAT ISACC FLOOK LATER MARRIED A WOMAN NAMED EDITH WALL WHO WAS AN AUNT ON MY MOTHER-IN-LAWS SIDE OF THE FAMILY. SORRY THIS SOUNDS SO CONFUSING. THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY CHILDREN TO THIS UNION. I DID PRINT OUT ABNER'S CIVIL WAR BATTLES THAT HE WAS IN AND GAVE IT TO MY HUSBAND AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT, FOR ME I ENJOY THE HISTORY PART OF THE FLOOK'S BECAUSE FOR YEARS, YEARS, AND YEARS HOWARD FLOOK THE ONLY SON OF ABNER & HATTIE DENIED THAT HE WAS INDIAN. HOWARD AND GLADYS FLOOK HAD 2 BOYS WILLIAM DOB 8-29-21 AND ROBERT (BOB) DOB ? WILLIAM WHO IS MY FATHER-IN-LAW LOOKED SO INDIAN THERE WAS NO DENIAL OF HIS HERITAGE WHEREAS ROBERT (BOB) FLOOK HIS YOUNGER BROTHER DID NOT HAVE THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE OF INDIAN. BOTH WILLIAM AND ROBERT (BOB) HAVE PASSED AWAY AND ARE BURIED IN IDAHO ALONG WITH HOWARD & GLADYS FLOOK. ABNER & HATTIE FLOOK,SETTLED IN WISCONSIN, BUT LATER HOWARD & GLADYS MOVED AWAY FROM WISCONSIN AND SETTLED IN IDAHO ALONG WITH WILLIAM AND HIS FAMILY AND ROBERT (BOB) WHO NEVER MARRIED. 2. Sara Steele
    3. Hi I agree with Sandy that the time is just barely enough to have made it between the two places. However, unless you have census data from 1860 which shows she is still in Dix, you may have her journey tourned around. It looks as though she left Dix in August and was in Dane County in Sept, perhaps as a permanent settler, or perhaps as a "nanny" helping with some families children. She apparently didn't change her name between censuses or i would have thought she might have eloped. You probably know that both Griswold and Wheeler are names that appear in early Wisconsin history. Author: sandy_kintner Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.dane/5737.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The most likely route is the Erie Canal to Lake Erie, a steamer to Milwaukee and then overland to Verona. The railroad didn't reach Madison until 1854 and then from the South, not from Milwuakee. From a 1848 diary I have read the steam ship trip from Erie to Milwaukee could be a manner of 3-4 days if there were no problems. Overland between Miwaukee and Verona would have been much slower. It's only about 110 miles, but in a 1848 diary I read it took 12 days because of muddy roads and unbridged streams. If the whole trip was overland then it would have been much longer. An 1848 diary I read described a man and horse traveling from Troy, NY to Jacksonville Ill and it took over a month. South Central Wisconsin in 1850 was still pretty much frontier and home to a hard scrabble life. The first settlers didn't arrive until the mid-1840s. It's hard to imagine anyone traveling there for a short visit. Hope this helps Sandy Kintner Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
