It jives with what John's granddaughter told me. Ancestry.com can be funny. I went to it and searched like you must have. There were articles on January 16, 1961 in the Appleton Post Crescent, Manitowoc Herald Times, the Sheboygan paper and Stevens Point paper. Because I do not have a membership, I could not read the articles. So, I went to my local library who has the "library" edition so that I could read each of the articles. When I did the search there, I got no results. Was there more to the article than what you posted? could you share it with me? I will next try the two Milwaukee papers that were in existence at that time, the Journal and the Sentinel. thanks again for your help Chuck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I live in Ramona, California near San Diego. I just found your post on the message boards asking about Kid Nichols. My mother always said that he was a cousin to my great grandmother. I have a scan of the family tree information that I have on our side of the Nichols family. It is a letter from Helen Abel Hatfield to my mother Evelyn Foale Day Staggs concerning their ancestors. Let me know if you would like a copy. I have not been able to link William H Nichols to Robert Nichols, but they were both born in the 1820s /- a few years. They lived in Albany, New York and the Robert Nichols family lived near there in the 1850s. Do you have any information that might help me tie the two families together? Anything you know would be appreciated. The death records index for the State of Wisconsin has a Sarah Fulton who died in Dane County on 15 August 1905. Volume 3, page 496. I could review it on my next trip to the state libary. Sarah is in the 1905 Wisconsin State Census. She is listed on the census and in the index as Sarah Torgeson. The census reads as follows: Ned Torgeson, age 56, head, born in Norway as were his parents. Works as a railroad engineer. Wife's name is given as Elvin, appears to be age 48, born in Wisconsin and parents born in Pennsylvania. Sarah, age 86, is listed as being his mother-in-law and her last name as being Torgeson. We know is probably an error, as it is unlikely that the mother-in-law would have the same surname as her son-in-law. Sarah is listed as being born in Pennsylvania. A widow. Madison, Dane Co., 5th ward. page 621, June 1, 1905 North Charter Street, house number is hard to see but mat be 112. I can send a copy of the census if you would like it. Please send me your e-mail address for attachments. marana@tds.net Sandie gc-gateway@rootsweb.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: HugNArm1 > Surnames: SILVER FULTON LOVELAND TORGERSON > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.dane/5771/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I am looking for any information pertaining to Sarah SILVER, daughter of Christopher SILVER and Marinda LOVELAND and wife of James T. >From the "History of Dane County, Wisconsin-1880" there is a biographical sketch on the City of Madison for Rev. Patrick F. Pettit, Pastor of St. Raphael's Church; born in 1832, in the Province of Leinster, County Westmeath, Ireland; came to the United States in 1847; in 1851, he entered the college "St. Mary's of the Lake," at Chicago, Ill., where he remained until nearly the end of 1856, and then immediately entered upon a theological course at St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee; he was ordained a priest on the 16th of December, 1859, in St. John's Cathedral, Milwaukee, by Archbishop Henni. He has had charge of the following missions: Cascade and three surrounding out-missions, from 1860 to the fall of 1862; then at St. Joseph's, Waukesha, until the spring of 1865; then in Portage, Columbia Co.; until the fall of 1867; then in Kenosha, until January, 1870; then to Watertown, until the winter of 1872; afterward, in Bay View, until August, 1875, when he was appointed to the pastorate of St. Raphael's Church, at Madison, Wis.; this is a large church, numbering 456 families. At beginning of Father Pettit's pastorate, the society was $1,500 in debt, as a result of building and making other improvements; this debt, by the prosperity and liberality of the congregation, is nearly extinguished; the stone church and parsonage are on Main street; 367 pupils attend the parochial school. Author: pooderbears Surnames: Hron Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.dane/5770/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sun Prairie Countyrman Thurs, Feb 22, 1906 Obituary DEATH OF WENZEL HRON Late last Thursday afternnon, Wenzel Hron, who resides about one mile east of this village, died suddenly while being brought from the sand pit on the Anton Thomas place, to Dr. Lewis' office. The man was carried into the drug store but life was already extinct, and the body was taken to the undertaking rooms of A. Johnson. A coroner's jury was impaneled by Justice Bull and an inquest was held over the remains that evening in the undertaker's rooms. From the evidence produced at the inquest, it seems that the man had been working in the pit shoveling with other workmen, and on that afternoon had quite a quantity of whiskey to drink , which was passed around all the men. Hron drank with the rest and it seemed to affect him more than the others, and he staggered around in the way of the others until they carried him bodily out of the pit. After standing around the pit, for a time he lay down upon some blankets, and some of the men covered him with coats. He lay there apparently asleep for some time- from one-half hour to an hour, when his heavy breathing attracted their attention, and he was then loaded into a sleigh to be taken home. He was transferred into his own cutter and Mr. Jacob Rentz was to take him home. On the way however, Hron seemed to be dying and the driver, being alarmed, took ! him to Dr. Lweis' office. The verdict of the coroner's jury wa sthat the deceased came to his death by "toxic poison from alcohol, and undue exposure". The jury was composed of T.G. Stone, C.A. Lewis, Alonzo Cobb, Julian Hayden, Frank Conner, and Carl Engel. The funeral services occurred last saturday afternoon from Sacred Heart's church, Rev. Blum officiating, and the remains laid to rest in the cemetery of that church. The deceased leaves a wife and six small children, who would be in poor circumstances were it not for the $1000 insurance policy he carried in the Foresters.
