She mentions the stones falling over and being walked on. Going quickly through the pages of the book I found something that said the Steele school became the Brown School after the Steeles moved away and it was then close to the Brown farm. Berta mentioned that her brother had told her the school was now a house. If you can locate the building compared to roads that existed on the 1873 map then you may be able to match it up with current roads on google earth or zillow.com and get a current address. I have been able to do that with one of my ancestor's home in Dunn Dane Co. There are people on these boards who can help with specific information to Dane Co. I'm far from Wisconsin and can only find things online and on Ancestry. For my Dane Co. ancestors I ordered Death Certificates from I believe the state of WI and they indicate what cemetery the person was buried in. I might have gotten then from Dane Co, it's been awhile. These people died from 1897 through the early 1900's though, later than Anna Erbe. So many of the old cemeteries have not been cataloged. I appreciate your help with this! I couldn't get the Vermont Town History pages to work for me, my computer kept freezing up, most likely due to it's size. I did find something written by Berta Erbe Hein that mentions the old cemetery, and that the monuments had fallen down and were being used as stepping stones. Is this the same thing written in the 1977 History? I just received a message from a friend at the Findagrave forum site that has a sister-in-law who grew up in that area. She has confirmed through relatives that there was indeed an old cemetery located behind the Steele-Booth School. The question of who owns it and the condition of the cemetery are being looked into but I'm wondering if a name could be found for it in an old history book or something? Do you know who in Dane County would have a record of burials there? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: RJ_Samp Surnames: Samp Abbott Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.dane/5780/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Cambridge - Edward Joseph Samp Jr. died Nov. 23, 2007, at Cambridge City Hospital. He was 89. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Samp was born in Madison, Wisc., on July 5, 1918, son of Edward Joseph Samp and Helen Sullivan Samp. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Wisconsin before moving to Cambridge and attending Harvard Law School. His legal studies were interrupted by World War II when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 1942. After returning from the war, he finished at Harvard and practiced law with the firm of Haussermann, Davison, and Shattuck. He later established his own firm, where he practiced estate and property law until his retirement in 1994. He married Mary Lewis Abbott of Portland, Maine, in 1946. In 1947, they moved to Cambridge where they raised their five children. Mr. Samp, a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II, was a leading gunnery officer aboard the USS Laffey, a destroyer nicknamed "The Ship That Would Not Die" for its exploits during the D-Day invasion and the battle of Okinawa. While at Normandy, the Laffey came under German artillery fire and was struck by a shell that did not explode, but became lodged in the ship near the bow. Lt. Commander Samp and several men under his command dislodged the live shell and threw it overboard. At Okinawa, the Laffey came under a heavy barrage of Kamikaze planes while on patrol north of the island. Samp was a leader of his ship's anti-aircraft defense against the suicide planes during the battle, six of which hit the ship. The ship did not sink. During the battle, in which 32 of his shipmates were killed, Samp was severely wounded by an exploding Japanese bomb. He was reported killed in action in his hometown newspaper, but his parents refused to believe he was dead, and an in! vestigation through Washington revealed he was alive in a Navy hospital in the Pacific. He was decorated for his heroism during the battle of Okinawa and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Samp was actively involved in Cambridge politics for many years. In 1959, he was appointed a Republican member of the Cambridge Election Commission. He served in that position until 1995, and chaired the commission from 1980 until his retirement. He also volunteered for the Cambridge Baseball League in a number of roles that included administration, fundraising, and coaching. His contributions continued for years after his own children participated. In 1991, the city recognized his contributions by naming a baseball field in his honor. After retiring, Mr. Samp studied Spanish at the University of Massachusetts, later teaching Spanish at the North Cambridge Senior Center. He also recorded audio law books at the Boston headquarters of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. He participated in numerous other charitable endeavors and organizations, including St. Peter's Church in Cambridge, the Boy Scouts, American Legion Post 442, the Economy Club in Cambridge, the Jefferson Investment Club, and the Boston Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Harvard Club of Boston. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Edward III and his wife, Kathy, of Wayland, John and his wife, Lyn, of Westwood, Frederick and his wife, Cushing, of Saco, Maine, Richard and his wife, Joella, of Arlington, Va., and Margaret of Cambridge. He is also survived by six grandchildren, three sisters, and one brother. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church on Concord Avenue in Cambridge. Donations in Mr. Samp's memory may be made to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Boston Unit, 58 Charles St., Cambridge, MA 02141 (www.rfbd.org/Boston_Unit) or to Blessed Sacrament School, 2112 Hollister Ave., Madison, WI 53726 (http://school.blsacrament.org). I am looking for ERBE family members buried in an abandoned cemetery, located between Black Earth and Blue Mounds. Here is what I know; "August and Anna ERBE settled on a farm between the towns of Blue Mounds and Black Earth. They lived in an old house that was on the property. Records show that August served as Justice of the Peace in Vermont Township in 1857. He built a two story house from limestone quarried right on his farm. On the opposite side of the road he built a large barn for dairy cattle. It had a 6 foot limestone foundation and a frame supported with huge, hand hewn timbers. The buildings were still around 120 years later. Six sons and five daughters were born on this farm. Anna died 5-05-1877 when their youngest child was only 2 years old. She was buried in a cemetery behind the little school 2 miles up the road. The school I am told was called the "Steele-Booth" School. I hoping someone knows the name of the cemetery, the location, and who all is buried there. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
