Author: sandy_kintner Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.dane/5786.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Bill It's actually a little complicated. The Evangelicals built a church at the top of the hill (a small cemetary is still there) just north of Hope. It was abandoned in 1910 or so and torn down for the lumber. Interestingly, the denomination had some sort of split in the late 1860's and half the members left to worship at a church building they bought from the Methodists a couple of miles north in Vilas (there's still a small cemetery there on Cottage Grove Road). For what every reason, in the early 1900's they put that building on rollers and very slowly moved it into Cottage Grove. The Evangelicals then disbanded in the late 1920 and that church was torn down not long afterwards. The two small congregations were never big enough to support their own preacher and were always were served by someone from Madison or even Arlington at the end. This is all off the top of my head, so some to the dates may be wrong, but you get the general idea. Sandy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: sandy_kintner Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.dane/5786.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: For what's worth, Freiderick and Mary Pepper sold the land to the Zion Evangelicals (not to be confused with the Evangelical Lutherans)for the building of their church which no longer stands, but was located a few hundred yards north of the Hope Lutheran Chruch. The following quotes are from a history of the Evangelical congregation that I wrote some years back. The source of the information is from Dane Co. land records. -Sandy Kintner "The purpose of incorporating and electing trustees was to prepare for Saturday, May 21, 1853 when a deed was drawn which transferred one acre of land from Friedreich and Mary Pepper to the "Trustees of the Zion Church" for the "consideration of one Dollar in hand"." "In November of 1878, Mary Lies (Christian Schaefer's widow) sold a strip of land (16 ft X 72 ft) to the church which added on to the east side of the church property . At the same time, the church trustees sold back to the estate of Frederick Pepper a strip of land ( 96 ft X 160 ft) off the west side of the church property . A year later, Mary Pepper sold another strip of land (16 ft X 80 ft) which extended the church property to the north." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
