    1. Ann Eliza Mackey of Portege
    2. Boyle Heights is an early community in Los Angeles City, California. I have recently traced my gr gr grandmother, Ann Eliza Mackey, nee Banta, to Boyle Heights, circa 1900. She lived at 122 N. St. Louis St, and later at 222 N. St. Louis St, with her son Frank P. Mackey. Frank continued on at the house for several years after his mother died on December 11, 1915. She is buried at Evergreen Cemetery. I have found no trace of him since. Evergreen Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in the City of Los Angeles (1877). It is just a few blocks from N. St. Louis St. and E. 1st St, in Boyle Heights. I talked with cemetery staff today, who confirmed the following: Ann Eliza Mackey died on December 11, 1915. She was interred on December 14, 1915. She is burried in Lot 4032, Section E. Her age at death was 89 years. Ann Eliza Mackey, nee Banta, descended from a long line of Freisland Dutch, whose progenitor was Epke Jacobse. Source "A Frisian Family, The Banta Genealogy, Descendants of Epke Jacobse, who came from Friesland Netherlands, to New Amsterdam, February. 1659", by Theodore M. Banta, New York, 1893. Reprinted by the Higginson Book Co., Salem, MA. For a time, Frank P. Mackey resided at 1957 1/2 E. 1st St. Old City Directories provided much of the above, but some years were missing or in band condition, so I may not have the complete story. Ann was widowed in 1873, when her Husband, George, died in Green Lake County, Wisconsin, where they had farmed, migrating from Saratoga County, New York in the late 1840s. She went to St. Louis, MO for a while, and my last record of her and Frank was in an 1885 Special Census, Portage, Colombia County, WI. I do not know when she came to Boyle Heights, but a cousin had notes that she did, and a photo of her standing on the porch of her house, apparently the one at 222 N. St. Louis St. I have requested her death record from the state, as the county did not have a record (L.A. City having their own Public Health Dept. in those days). I hope to learn of her death, mortician, etc. Evergreen does not have any family information. I have also ordered her Probate file, which will provide some more information. I will also ask the LA Times to do an obituary search. What churches existed in this neighborhood, 1900 - 1915? The 1990 census is not available and there was no 1895 special census, so I do not know exactly when she took up residence in Boyle Heights. I believe that she owned the houses on St. Louis St., and here estate was sizable for that day. I will search for a land records index? Eager to communicate with anyone interested or able to share.
