    1. Camp Randall and Forest Hill Cemetery

    3. Camp Randall did have a cemetery for Civil War dead. It is called Forest Hill Cemetery and it is a National Cemetery for war veterans. It is located about 1.5 miles west of Camp Randall. On the west edge, north and south of the mausoleum is located "Union Rest" and "Confederate Rest". On the south end, around a large effigy mound, are military burials post 1900. Other military burials are scattered about the cemetery. The number can be better appreciated by visiting late in May around Memorial Day when very military burial is marked with a US flag. I have a photo on my web site of a portion of Union Rest. homepages.rootsweb.com/~bdweisel/ Follow the link to the Miles B. Hively homepage. The phone number for Forest Hill is 608 266-4720. I have copied some text from the city of Madison homepage about Forest Hill. --------------------- more about Forest Hill ------------------------ from http://www.ci.madison.wi.us/parks/foresthill.htm In 1857, the City Of Madison purchased a tract of land with a lovely view overlooking the entire city and the surrounding lakes. Eventoday, this tree-lined cemetery, located on Speedway Road, retains an original park-like atmosphere with winding roads and flowerbeds. Since the cemetery was created at the time of the Civil War, one of the most interesting areas for visitors are the two military burial plots for Union and Confederate soldiers. Many Confederate soldiers were held prisoner at nearby Camp Randall. One hundred forty of them died and were buried at Forest Hill. In a nearby plot, 240 Union veterans were buried. Forest Hill Cemetery is one of the first U.S. National Cemeteries in Wisconsin. >Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2000 01:27:49 -0500 >From: "Todd &\\or Lori" <takhome@uswest.net> >To: WICOLUMB-L@rootsweb.com >Message-ID: <033301bfe0c9$fd74c5c0$bb03b4d1@wavetech.net> >Subject: Re: Camp Randolph >Content-Type: text/plain; > charset="iso-8859-1" >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > >Linda, >Randolph is a little village on the border of Columbia & Dodge counties, it >is about half & half in both counties.
