    3. Hello List! Just learned, yesterday in fact, that my great-aunt, Josephine Geimer McCarthy, died in Columbia County, date of death 24 Aug 1992. This after researching her whereabouts for over a year! Is there a kind soul who might be willing to look up her death certificate at the county courthouse? Hope to hear from someone. Thanks. 1. Newport Cemetery, Newport Twp., Columbia Co.
    2. Alan Furchtenicht
    3. Is there anyone on this list who may have relatives or ancestors buried in the Newport Cemetery, which is next ot the Newport Lutheran Church in the town of Newport, east of Wisconsin Dells, just off of highway 16? Most of those buried there came from Norway, or are of Norwegian descent. There is a chance we may be related. Many of my ancestors are buried there. Some of the surnames are: Anderson, Apeland, Gregerson ?, Nordblom, etc. Alan Furchtenicht Madison, WI

    1. 1880 MODLER in Lodi, Columbia Co.
    2. Dale Miller Payne
    3. Am looking for info on my great-great grandparents who were Oswald T. & Verena MODLER. I found them in the 1880 census living in Lodi with their 2 children: Arthur 8 yrs, born in Wis and Laura 6yrs, born in Wis. Oswald was born in Germany abt 1848 (making him 32 in 1880) and was a barber while in Lodi. Verena was born about 1849 (making her 31 in 1880) in Switzerland. They had a border living with them in 1880 who was also a barber, Jacob Empter 18 yrs, born in Wis. By the 1900 census they are on Ninth Street in Milwaukee with 3 additional children for a total of 5...all still at home! The info on all 5 kids from the 1900 census is as follows: Arthur G. age 28 born Jan 1872 Laura age 26 (my great-grandmother who married Wm Wenninger) born March 1874 Ella age 18 born Feb 1882 Alma age 10 born Jan 1890 Irwin age 8 born Dec 1891 By the 1920 census Verena is listed as a widow still living on Ninth Street in Milwaukee with her youngest son, Erwin R. then age 28 yrs. Yes, his name starts with an I in 1880 and an E in 1920. I don't know when or where Oswald & Verena came to America and finally Wis or where they met and married, but Lodi is my best start. As all the children were born in Wis I expect some if not all were born in Lodi. Is it possible for someone on the list to do a look up on this family for me? All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanx, Dale Miller Payne

    1. Researching HABERMANN; Lodi, Columbia, WI
    2. bunnyden
    3. Just signed on. I am researching my hubby's line of HABERMANN. John, George, and Anton Habermann came to Lodi in 1888 and opened a blacksmith-wagon shop, which ran until the early 1940's. I would love any information that is available. I note six Columbia County History Books on the Columbia website; are there indexes of names for any of these books? I also note a Lodi newspaper; The Lodi Enterprise. When was the newspaper estabilshed and what papers are available to research for the above timespan. Thank You! <bunnyden@sunrisenet.com>

    1. Re: naturalization records
    2. Alan Furchtenicht
    3. Tom: the naturalization records should be in the Archives division of the State Historical Society in Madison. They are the Area Research Center for Columbia, Dane, etc. counties and are located on the 4th floor of the Society building at the west end of State St. near the Memorial Library and Memorial Union. There are index volumes, etc. By separate email, I'm sending you the information from the Archives online catalog about the naturalization materials for Columbia Co. If you have questions about the division, please check their website: http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/archives/ Alan At 06:25 AM 4/1/99 -0800, WICOLUMB-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: >WICOLUMB-D Digest Volume 99 : Issue 7 > >Today's Topics: > #1 naturalization records [Tom Krakow <tomkrakow@juno.com>] > >______________________________X-Message: #1 >Date: Tue, 30 Mar 1999 23:09:45 -0600 >From: Tom Krakow <tomkrakow@juno.com> >To: WICOLUMB-L@rootsweb.com >Message-ID: <19990331.142807.6822.0.TomKrakow@juno.com> >Subject: naturalization records > >Hello, > >Where are the early Naturalization papers for Columbia County? 3. Oops! Sorry! To see the pages with info on Zona Gale & Frederick Turner (and other Wisconsin notables) you'll have to start at the home page. Gale & Turner are found under Wisconsin Authors and their Works. I haven't fully explored this site, so if anyone finds more Columbia County connections there let us know. If you like Wisconsin history this really is an excellent site. -- Lori http://www.library.wisc.edu/elib.cgi-bin/elib.display.cgi/etext/WIReader/Con tents.html

    3. For those interested in a little Portage history, here are two excellent sites: Zona Gale (1874-1938) was a Pulitzer Prize winner and Portage native: http://www.library.wisc.edu/elib.cgi-bin/elib.display.cgi/etext/WIReader/WER 0054.html Frederick Turner, another Portage native, was a professor at Harvard and it is for him the Turner High School is named: http://www.library.wisc.edu/elib.cgi-bin/elib.display.cgi/etext/WIReader/WER 0750.html Both sites have pictures of early Portage and the Zona Gale site has a 1874 map of Portage. Enjoy! Lori

    2. PATRICIA DARLING
    3. Hi Kevin- I can't help you with your ancestors, but if you ever get to go to Columbus, I think you'll really enjoy it. There is an elderly lady there who has all the cemetery records in her home, with plat maps and obituaries. She was very helpful. She was looking for someone to take over for her when I was there a few years ago, so there may be someone different now. The cemetery is well kept, and easy to get around in. There is also a monthly newsletter called "Columbus Old Times" put out by a local teacher. All the articles are taken from old newspapers at the library. They have all the old papers on microfilm. 3. I just joined this email group in hopes of finding information on my gg grandparents Charles F Roth 1852-1915 wh married Mary D Altschwager (1853-1917) in 1876. They are in the 1880 census for Columbus but moved to Taylor Co shortly thereafter and eventually moved to Appleton, Outagamie Co. Mary is buried in Hillside Cem in Columbus, as is an infant daughter Clara. I have never been to Columbus...must get there soon. Any help is appreciated!!
