Just want to know if there is any activity on this list? Columbia County is new territory for me. Have lots of questions, is there an archive?? Thanks, Stan Looking for Norwegians from Telemark, Skobba and others
My daughter lives in Rio and I lives about 25 miles from there. I moved up here about 10 years ago. I'm from Illinois. I see if I can get you the info on the Columbia County Historical Society. They changes contact person and I don't have the new info. Do you have the URL for the WI State Historical Society? WI has state census on the "5" year seperate from the Federal Census. What names are your searching for? Maybe there is someone with name name still in the area. sr wrote: > > Well, now that I know there are folks out there, I impatiently ask > questions. > Did Wis. have state census in 1870-80? > Does anyone have the state or federal census that they would like to do a > look up? > Are there folks out there with info on Rio in this time frame? > Has anyone ever heard of a place called 'Blue Cart' > Are there specific sources that might pertain to Norwegians, or was there a > church that may have records. > Any good URL's to search? > Tips on Wi research? > Sorry if I'm impatient, but after 10 years of searching in MN, I have made > some progress! > > Thanks , Stan
Hello Listers, I am researching the EHR family of Oberweis and Bettingen Rheinland. One of women married a BARTHEL and emigrated to Wright Country Minnesota; one of the EHR men emigrated to Columbia County Wisconsin; and his brother's descendants emigrated to eastern Iowa, primarily Black Hawk County. At least one of the Wisconsin family settled on Milwaukee's east side; and one branch can be found in Ward Country North Dakota. There is also a group of EHRs to be found in DuPage Country Illinois but the relationship between the groups has not been established. One EHR woman remained in Oberweis and married a BUCHEL and perhaps other EHR members are still in the area. If someone is doing like research on this family I would be glad to exchange data. LOUISE
Regarding your request for information about the death of Chapin C. Skinner, 1874-1875 The newspapers of the time would many times include at least a mention of a death. Sometimes a cause of death is given. If you are lucky there will be a complete obituary. The State Historical Society (in Madison) has many old newspapers on microfilm. I am not sure where Hampden is located in Columbia County. If it is near Portage, your best bet, in the 1875-1875 time frame, would be the "Western Advance." If you live in Wisconsin the film rental, via ILL is quite reasonable. If you live out-of-state, it is $15. Does anyone know which years Wisconsin had a state census and where are these census records. I live in the southeast and we do not yet have copies of the federal census records for WI much less the state records. Thanks, Susan -- Susan & David jkdevl@earthlink.net
I have narrowed down the death of my Chapin C Skinner to 1874-1875. He was last seen on the 1870 census, Hampden, Columbia Co., Wisconsin. His last child was born circa 1874, and by the 1875 Wisconsin state census, his wife Jane was a widow. The state has no death records that early. Can anyone tell me a place to write that might have newspaper clippings, etc. for that area and time? any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Kathy heweys@prodigy.net
I am new to your list and am looking forward to working with you. My first inquiry is concerning the father of William Watkin Williams b. 1868 in Ottawa, Waukesha County, Wisconsin. His father's name was Thomas Williams. In the 1860 Census of Wisconsin there are many Thomas Williams names in different locations. I believe the Thomas that I want is Thomas D. Williams but I am unsure and would like to have verification. The census shows Thomas D. located in Columbia Co., Courtland, pg. 187. After looking at a county map of Wisconsin I began to doubt my information because Dodge County is Closer to Waukesha County than is Columbia County. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Sharon
Hello All, Sorry for the trouble, but some kook sabotaged my e-mail subscriptions to the Rootsweb.com mailing lists. I can still receive postings to my USER683614@AOL.COM box, or here. I also have about a dozen screen names with two other Internet providers, so if those of you who I am helping will e-mail me privately, I'll give them to you. I hope this problem will resolve itself. Hello to the Great State of Wisconsin, I am searching for any information anyone can provide me with regard to the surname TARRANT and FEDEREN. Both families lived in various parts of the state, but spent quite a bit of time in the Minneapolis area. I am searching for PHILIP FEDEREN (1883) and his wife EDITH FEDEREN (1884) and their two children FABIOLA TARRANT (1897) and CECILE TARRANT (1893). They were last known to be in the Twin Cities area in 1944, but their descendants could be anywhere by now. They were relatives of GEORGE A. SHANNON AND ISABELLA (McDonald) SHANNON of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and their son ROBERT D. SHANNON, who was last known around 1942-44 to be living in Spencer, Iowa. Robert's wife was named JESSE and his children were ANNABELLE and GEORGE, also of Chippewa Falls, WI. Sometime around 1940-45, the family and the germane cousins and step-relatives scattered about the state for an unknown reason, so I'm asking for help from anyone in ANY Wisconsin County. Any information regarding these families or their descendants would be greatly appreciated. Yes, this was posted to every board in Wisconsin because the families scattered and I'm at the point of desperation. It conforms to the guidelines established by RootsWeb, USGenWeb and that awesome upstart ALHN, so it IS NOT considered spam. Take care all. I wish you the best of luck with your own searches. Godfrey Friese appeared at a St. Mary's of Portage baptism in 1868 so would have been born around 1835 is my guess. LOUISE
To Louise, I know the name Friese. There were several in Dodge County. My stepfather, (now deceased) was a Friese. What time frame are we talking? Donna
While researching the EHR surname in Columbia Country, my cousin came across the name 'Godrey Friese' in a St. Mary's record of him being godparent to an Ehr child. My original info was that a 'FRIESS' married an EHR but no one has more than that. They may be the same so I am asking listers if anyone has anything on that. I am down south and haven't been to Columbia Cty yet. Also have a 'HENRY J EHR' listed as marrying priest to several Ehrs. Would anyone have parish info on him? Thank you, LOUISE
Hello-- I am researching the EHR family of the Midwest. My 3 greatgrandfather is buried in St Mary's of Portage cemetery. Is there someone to share info with me? Louise

29 August, 1999 Dear Robin, I have a bio in my book for Ervin McCall in the town of Springvale and he is also later mentioned as an early settler of Springvale. Both are shown below. I hope it helps. Richard D. Jenkins ERVIN McCALL [10-08-1815], Hebron, Washington, the son of John & Nancy McCall. Ervin was married on 05-18-1838 in Indiana to HARRIET GRIFFIN, [04-14-1817], Schoharie County, New York, who died [08-11-1854], at age of 37. She was the daughter of Seth Griffin. They had eight children: Nancy A., married Richard Mason of New York; Susan M., who had married Henry Ellis, died [01-01-1873] and left three children: George, Effie and Ida; Mary E., married Richard Gage; Almina, married Samuel Wilcox of Portage; and four children died: Orpha, Alice, Harriet and an infant not named. Ervin had a second marriage on 04-02-1855 to LOUISA ANN WELLS [04-20-1829], Chenango County, New York, daughter of Asa Wells, who died [11-02-1850], aged 79. They had four children: Asa Ervin [12-22-1856]; John S. [09-12-1860]; Sanford H. [04-03-1863]; and Harriet V. [11-23-1865]. Ervin McCall located on his land in 1845; his brother, John D. McCall, unmarried, who was in partnership with him, died [02-26-1851], age 40. Section 1, 201 acres. Late in April, 1845, Ervin McCall came here from La Porte, Indiana. On the first day of May, he deposited the money for the entry of eighty acres of land at the sub-land office at Fox Lake. He returned to La Porte, picked up his family, and brother John, and set out for their new home. While crossing the Fox River in Illinois, their wagon overturned, resulting in a fracture of his wife's arm. The broken arm was properly adjusted and they came on to Johnstown, Rock County, where his brother-in-law, M.W. Patton lived. He and his brother continued to their claim, arriving in the middle of September, and spent a night at the log house of Sam Langdon. Here, they built a log house before returning to Rock County for their family.

Hi, I researching the Jacob & Peter Kurth families. The two brothers came to the US in 1883 from Prussia. They settled in Lodi, Columbia Co. for about 10 years. Then moving to Westport in Dane Co. Jacob & his wife Barbara settled in Hammel Town, Taylor Co. in the late 1890's. and raised their family there. Peter & his wife Christine lived in Westport for about 10 years then moved to Springfield, Dane Co., then Madison where he died. I'm hoping to find someone else who is researching the Kurth's. I've also heard a family rumor that Peter's youngest son Joseph was a Green Bay Packer in the 1933/34 season. Does anyone know anything about Jospeh Kurth who played for the Packers? Thanks Mary
