Wi Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/Clark/10360 Surname: McIlhattan ------------------------- You stated your ancestor was John McIlhattan born in 1775, do you know where, could it be Scotland? The Kintyre Penisula of Scotland is a home to many McIlhattans, my g.g grandfather was James, born in/near Muasdale to Robert and Jean Currie in 1804. I've also seen the spelling of McIllchattan. Our name was shortened to Hattan when he came to Canada, not sure the date.
Posted on: Clark Co. Wi Biographies Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/ClarkBios/10367 Surname: ------------------------- The above is mostly correct. However, the following additional information clarifies some facts: 1) Frederick Sell's wife was Helena (Karlin) Sell. 2) Herman Sell's wife was Helena Pieper. 3) Herman and Helena's children's names were Hilbert, Selma and Adella. They later had two more children: Friedrich and Gerhardt. Gerhardt was killed in World War II in Italy. 4) Helena (Pieper) Sell never lived in Juneau, but several miles out of Juneau in the township of Clyman in Dodge County.

Wi Biographies Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/ClarkBios/10366 Surname: SHORT, PAYNE, MATOUSEK, HEREID, SCHMEAR, HOLUB, TIBBETTS ------------------------- Source: Marshfield News-Herald, 1957 Short's 50th Jubilee Noted at Neillsville Mr. and Mrs. Frank Short of route 4, whose 50th wedding anniversary falls on Wednesday, celebrated the occasion Saturday, when members of the immediate family were dinner guests at their home. Jan. 30 is not only their anniversary date but also the 23rd anniversary of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Matousek, West Allis, and the 19th birthday of the latter couple's son Duane, now with the armed forces in Korea. For the anniversary event, Mrs. Short wore a corsage of yellow rose buds, and her husband had a white carnation boutonniere. Mr. Short was born Dec. 11, 1884 on the home farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Short, in the town of Washburn [Clark County]. He was educated in the the Shortville School and worked with his father on the farm, where he was married Jan. 30, 1907, to Miss Dessa Payne. The bride was born in Richland County on Sept. 6, 1885, to Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Payne, and attended schools in Shortville and Gays Mills. The family moved first to Shortville, then to Gays Mills and returned to Shortville when she was 20 years old. Aside from nine years at Baraboo and Rochester, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Short have spent all their married life on the home farm, which was purchased from his father's estate. Both are still in good health, and continue to operate the farm. Mr. Short also served for eight years as assessor of the town of Washburn. Their family consists fo two daughters, Mrs. Raynor (Marie) Vaughn, Washington, D. C., and Mrs. Louis (Helen) Matousek, West Allis; two sons, Kenneth Short, Neillsville, and Roger Short, West Allis; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A sister of Mrs. Short, Mrs. Pete Hereid of Alma Center, who had attended her at her wedding 50 years ago, was among those attending the celebration. Others present were Mr. Hereid; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Matousek, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Short and children and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Schmear and daughter, West Allis; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Short and family, Neillsville; Mrs. Verna Payne, Neillsville; Mr. and Mrs. George Holub, Alma Center; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Short, route 4, and Miss Beverly Matousek, route 1, Neillsville, and Mr. and Mrs. James Tibbetts, Rockford, Ill.
I, too, think it's wonderful that people take the time to share the information they have but it does get a bit overloaded at times. Is there any way a new listserve could be made (like the one for cemeteries) just for sharing things like obituaries and biographies? Perhaps that would solve the problem. Just a thought. Jean
Once again I will explain a few things. The reason everyone on the WICLARK list receives a copy of all the obituaries and biographies is because the WICLARK list and the GenConnect Board on the web are LINKED! That means that everything that gets posted to the website *automatically* gets sent to the mail list. There are several advantages to this: 1. No need to remember to check a website regularly to see if anything pertaining to your search has been added. 2. People who post to the GenConnect site are not necessarily subscribers to the mail list; therefore the potential to find new cousins is increased. 3. Once the information has been downloaded to your mailbox, you can read through it at YOUR pace rather than being restricted to the time you are physically connected to the web. 4. And of course there is the fact that we receive informative, valuable data to help us in our searches. **Everything** posted to the Clark Co. GenConnect board is sent to WICLARK list... not just the bios and obits. Queries, wills, and all other info posted to the website will be sent. I CHALLENGE ALL OF YOU TO POST AT LEAST ONE THING TO THE WEBSITE SO WE CAN SAY WE HAVE HELPED THE EFFORTS OF THE FEW PEOPLE WHO HAVE POSTED A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF VALUABLE INFORMATION. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~wiclark/ and follow the GenConnect Links (Queries, Biographies, Obituaries). There are approximately 100 list members..... so that will make for quite a bit of information. It takes no more time to add to the website than it does to type an email to the list. I hereby exempt Janet and Stan from this little challenge :-) Happy Contributing!! Gena Listowner
I received the following from the WIGEN-L Board on 2/28: >Well, the good news is the USGenConnect Boards are back up. The bad news is >that some of the boards are missing all the February posts (yes, both WoodCoWI >and PortageCoWI are affected)... > >There is nothing I can do at the moment. They are going to restore it with the >backups, so PLEASE do NOT NOT NOT resend the February posts!!! Wait for them >to fix it (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE)... So, In case anyone noticed a missing post, please be patient. When we hear that the February posts are all restored, I will check for completeness. I have a copy of ALL the posts ever made to the GenConnect Boards - about 2300 of them. Bob Herald

The problem is, when it is delivered to your emailbox, it sometimes gets cumbersome if you don't read your email very often. I think people who have signed up for the mail list may have had a different idea of what it would be like. They may have thought that it was a place to ask for info and to exchange info they have been researching. Not a repository for data. Yes, I commend the people who are copying all this information. It's interesting to read.........if you have the time. Nancy
Dear Clark County Resaerchers: I waited until I could double-check the Rootsweb Mail List Utilities Page before commenting. Lately there has been a flurry of activity on the list as countless biographies and obituaries of former Clark County residents get posted. Personally, I've enjoyed every single one. Now for some technical information about how the Digest is set up..... Anyone NOT wanting to receive each posting as a separate email is encouraged to subscribe to the list in Digest Mode. Send an email to WICLARK-D-request@rootsweb.com with the word subscribe in the subject line. However, if 100 biographies get posted, you are still going to receive 100 biographies..... they will simply be "grouped" together. Even if you are in Digest mode, you can receive more than one Digest each day. The current setting is to release a Digest once ever 24 hours...... UNLESS an additional post that would get added to the waiting "group" puts the Digest over 40,000 characters. For example: There are 3 posts of 5000 characters each (15,000 characters total) waiting to be released in Digest mode. The next Digest is scheduled to be released in 10 hours. Suddenly there are 10 more posts added, each containing 5000 characters. This causes the total number of CHARACTERS in the waiting Digest to reach 65,000 characters. The way the lists are set up, even though the Digest is not scheduled to be sent for 10 more hours, it will be sent when those 10 posts were added simply because the character limit has now been reached. For the information of everyone concerned, 40,000 characters is the HIGHEST possible setting. As long as there are so many lengthy posts being added, there will also be numerous Digests released each day. All contributions and contributors are encouraged! It saddens me when people unsubscribe because they have to sort through all this valuable information. A suggestion I can make is to filter your email by making a separate folder for anything that comes addressed to WICLARK. That way everything received from WICLARK will go directly to its own folder and not be mixed in with all your other email. But remember: 100 posts is still 100 posts, regardless if they arrive separately or in a bundle. I'd be willing to bet that some of the lists with hundreds of subscribers would be envious if they knew the wealth of DOCUMENTED information that is flashing before our eyes each day! Clark County may be small, but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for with quality. A debt of gratitude goes out to these major contributors for keeping life in our tiny little group. I'd have to agree with Bruce. They deserve a big hand in helping out with the history and its people. Besides, one day they might have a surname they are related to.
