    3. Posted on: Clark Co. Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/ClarkObits/12062 Surname: O'Neill, Douglas, Covill, Darling ------------------------- Clark County Republican (newspaper of Neillsville, WI) March 7, 1872 After a lingering illness of several months, varying considerably in severity, Thomas O'Neill, only son of James O'Neill, the pioneer and founder of this village, died in Sparta (where he had been receiving medical treatment) on last Saturday noon, March 2, 1872, age 21 years and 20 days. The sad intelligence conveyed in the foregoing lines, reached here by telegram soon after the event which they chronical had transpired. His remains were brought here on the following day by his parents, who were with him in his dying hours, in a costly black walnut casket with silver mountings and otherwise approriately decorated, and preserved until yesterday to await the arrival of a sister from school, before being consigned to their final resting place. The deceased had suffered a great deal, and a short time before his death he was rendered entirely blind by the affections of his system, which were numerous, the most prominent among which were dropsy and disease of the liver and kidneys. The news came wholly unexpected, except to a few, and as the sorrowful tidings went rapidly from mouth to mouth, a wide-spread felling of sorrow and sadness became very soon apparent in the village. "Tommy" O'Neill, as he was familiarly known, was born and reared in this place, and probably had a larger circle of aquaintances than any young man in this vicinity. His friends were legion, because he possed a rare faculty for sociabilty, was proverbially honest and ever frank, generous and warm-hearted. He was really the pet of the town and was accorded rare privilages by everyone. As evidence of this high regard we will only refer to the large concourse of people who gathered at the little church yesterday to witness the funeral ceremonies and pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of the departed. He was the only son of kind, loving and devoted parents, the only and affectionate brother of two loving sisters. To them the death of "Tommy" has caused the most poignant grief, and they have the heartfelt sympathy of a sorrowful community in their bereavement. It is indeed hard to see a young man full of life and hope, cut down just at his maturity, when everything is promising and nothing has yet been realized. But "death loves a shinning mark'" and the blow is given without the power of human hands to avert it. My notes: This obit was sent to me by Kevin Struensee, a volunteer genealogist. Tommy O'Neill's parents were James O'Neill & Jane Douglas. His sisters Isabella (Covill) and Maria (Darling). James O'Neill was the brother of my ggg grandfather.

Krejci Family: *Thomas Krejci (grandfather of Frank M.) was born and lived in Bohemia {Germany}, Europe and marries Mary Skotiel*. *John Krejci (father of Frank M. Krejci) married Barbara Kunish, where they were born. They were born in Lepnice, Bohemia and came to America in 1855. One daughter, Barbara, was born there and died shortly after coming to America*. The family landed in America after a 6 weeks voyage in a sailing vessel, then proceeded to Washington Co. Wisconsin. John Krejci had been a farmer in Germany and now he secured a piece of improved land in Trenton Township, Washington County, Wisconsin and began the work of impovement with an ox team. His place was located 32 miles from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, then an insignificant hamlet. He often walked to Milwaukee, bringing provisions home on his back. He lived on this farm until the last ten years of his live, after which he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He died at the age of 84 and his wife at the age of 66. In addition to their daughter, Barbara, the first, eight children were born to them in Washington County, Wisconsin. They were Wenzel, 1868-1943, 75; Mary; Joseph (first); Barbara (second); Frank Matt; Joseph (second); Anna and Louis. *Joseph (first) died as a young boy.* When he lived on his farm in Washington County, Wisconsin. He had cleared and improved his farm, erected good buildings on it and had reached a state of comparative prosperity.* Frank Matt Krejci, a proprietor of a paying farm in section 33, York Township, Clark County, Wisconsin, was born in Washington County, Wisconsin November 4, 1859. He was the son of John and Barbara (Kunish) Krejci. He attended school in Washington County and grew to manhood on his father's farm. He began working independently at the age of twenty years. After spending two years at farming, he took up the carpenter trade, at which he was occupied for three years. In 1885, he was united in marriage to Anna Helen Schaefer. She was born in Washington County, Wisconsin and the daughter of Joseph Schaefer, both parents being natives of Europe. Coming to Clark County, Wisconsin as a young married couple, Frank Krejci and his wife resided for the first winter with his sister and brother-in-law, John Klinke and the following spring moved to their present place in section 33, York Township, Clark County, Wisconsin which consists of 80 acres of wild land and there being no road they had to cut their way in. Frank Krejci built a log house of one room, 14X26 in dimension and a log barn and then proceeded with the arduous task of developing a farm. It was not until the next spring he got a cow and five years later a yoke of steers. His first crops were grubbed in. He often walked to Neillsville, Wisconsin, 7 miles, carring home supplies on his back. His wife accompanied him, carrying eggs and butter to market and receiving 6 cents a pound for butter. In the course of time, by his own hard labor he got his land cleared, also building a nice brick house of 8 rooms {original burnt and was rebuilt, still standing 1999} and a barn, 36X48 feet and a silo of 100 tons capacity. He raises a good grade of stock and is the proprietor of a good farm which renders profitable returns for the labor invested in it. He is a shareholder in the Granton State Bank and the packing plant in Wausau, Wisconsin and was formerly a member of the company that operated the old cheese factory. For one year, he served as a member of the York Township side board. Mr and Mrs Krejci have six children: Victor (unmarried) is a farmer in the Fremont Township, Clark County, Wisconsin, where he cleared 80 acres of wild land and made a farm of it and being a carpenter putting up the buildings but still lives at home; Emma, now Mrs Louis Hemp of Neillsville, Wisconsin has two boys (Leon and Warren); Mary, the wife of George Hales and the mother of two girls ( Verona and Marion); Thomas, Estella, and Edwin still reside at home. *Mrs Frank M. Krejci was the daughter of Joseph Schaefer and his wife, Mary Chaska. Really her name was Mary Vilete. Her mother was married twice, first to a Vilete, to which union Mary was born. Chaska was her stepfather. Mary left a lover, who was very dear to her, in Bohemia to come to the USA with her parents to care for her mother. Her lover, in Bohemia, felt it was his duty to remain with his parents and so they had to part.* {Frank Matt Krejci died June 16, 1859 on the farm, York Township, north of Graton, Clark County, Wisconsin. Wi Queries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/Clark/10468 Surname: WILCOX, WALKER, MUMBRUE, HAYWARD, PALMER ------------------------- Many thanks to Janet for posting all the information she has on the Clark Co. site. This week I found my g-g-g-grandfather's obit thanks to her. Lewis Henry WILCOX has been a circuitous trail to follow. The local paper where he was buried in Dec. 1907 (Price Co.) listed that he died in Waupaca. After searching in Waupaca for a death certificate, I found a small reference in the paper there that he had died in Fairchild (Eau Claire Co.). After going to courthouse and not finding a death certificate, I sent to the state. From them I received the death certificate for Clark Co. In searching the site, I found his obit, thanks to the posting by Janet in Dec. 2000. Lewis Henry WILCOX was born in 1842 in New York, was in the Civil War for 4 years (they are still searching for his pension records for me), came home and married the sister of a fellow soldier, Anna HAYWARD, of Waupaca Co. They had 4 children and then moved to Price Co. WI where they were on the first train crossing the bridge into Park Falls. They were pioneer settlers of that community having claimed 160 acres under a patent. After moving to Fifield, WI, Lewis left home and moved to the Eau Claire area to work with a lumber company. Anna filed for divorce after 7 years, a fact that had not been passed down in family history. Thus the search for Lewis has been confusing. I am now looking for any family in the WILCOX line. It seems there are other WILCOX descendents out there. Lewis' parents were Charles Winthrop and Emily (PALMER) WILCOX. Marilyn Steben

Wi Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/ClarkObits/11941 Surname: RIPLINGER, SCHILL, LAMONT, ZASSENHAUS, DIETSCHE ------------------------- (restored) Frank Riplinger (1843-1925) DATE: Feb 15 2001 OBITUARY - Colby Phonograph - June 25, 1925 "Civil War Vet, Dies of Old Age" Frank Riplinger Passed Away at the Home of His Daughter" Frank Riplinger, Civil War veteran and one of the pioneer settlers of this section, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Zassenhaus, in the town of Colby, on Friday, June 19th, 1925, at 6:30 pm, the raveges of old age being the cause of his demise. Frank Riplinger was born on November 16, 1843, near Trior, Elsace-Lorraine, and came to America with an uncle at the age of 13, landing at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where he took up the trade of a shoe maker. He became very adept at his chosen trade, and was making good headway when he decided that his services were needed in the great civi war, and accordingly inlisted in Company E., 14th Wisconsin Vol. Infantry, at Carlton, Kewaunee county, on March 5th, 1864. After joining the Union Army he experienced some of the service, participating in several important engagements and minor battles, and was one of those who went with General Sherman in the famous 'March to the Sea.' He was mustered out of service at Mobile, Alabama, on October 9, 1865. After leaving the army he returned to Manitowoc County where he again took up the trade at Schoolhill. On January 9, 1869, he was united in marriage to Miss Katherina Schill, of Schoolhill, and in the fall of the year 1875, he and his wife decided to take a chance in the new country of Upper Wisconsin which was being opened up for settlers. After working his trade for a short time in the little settlement here at Colby in that early day, he took up a homestead in the Town of Hull in the vicinity of Cherokee. After a struggle of several years on the homestead to make a living they moved into the village and Mr. Riplinger became interested in a planning mill establishment which was erected on the site where the old electric power-house now stands. Several years later he engaged in the furniture business which he conducted for quite a number of years. When the Soo railway took over the interests of the Central Wisconsin Railroad, Mr. Riplinger conceived the idea that the place which went by the name "Osborne" on the new cut-off between Spencer and Owen, would be a good place to start a business. Accordingly, he and his two sons, Fred & Ben, went to this place and opened up a general store. This was nearly thirteen years ago, and at this time there exists a thriving little village called "Riplinger" named after him, and his sons, who started with him and will continue in the hardware and implement business which he helped them to build. Mr. Riplinger was a man who was well thought of by all of his acquaintances, and when he once made a friend it was always a friend. All of the older citizens of this community who knew him realize his worth as a kind husband and father. For many years he was handicapped with a failing eyesight and during the past several years he has been totally blind. Nevertheless, he carried uncomplaningly and his ambitions never ceased until the hand of time claimed him for its own. He is survived by two sons, three having died previously, Fred and Benjamin F., of Riplinger, and two daughters, Mrs. Angus (Katherine) Lamont and Mrs. Fred (Anne) Zassenhaus, of Colby; one brother John, of Portland, Oregon, two sisters, Mrs. Ben Dietsche of Veefkind, Clark County, and Mrs. Jake Hanson of Portland, Oregon. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon, (June 24), from the St. Mary's Catholic Church in this city, Rev. H. Lachnit officiating and his remains were laid to rest in the catholic cemetary beside those of his wife who preceeded him in death on April 12, 1889. The large number of beautiful offerings and the long funeral procession is testimony of the esteem in which he was held in the community in which he lived for fifty years.

She came to America in 1849, settling first in New York, where about two years later she was married to John M. Hommell. To them were born five children, John William, now of Neillsville; Chas. Henry, who died at White Pigeion, Mich. in 1908; Mary A. Warner, Greenwood; George, Watertown, S.Dak.; Edward, Castle Rock, Washington. After the birth of the first two the family removed to Wisconsin, settling in West Salem where the last three children were born and where they remained until 1867, when they came to Clark County, living here continually until death claimed them. The husband, John Hommell, died in the town of Eaton in 1868. Some years later the widow married, Moses Babb, who passed away at Greenwood in 1895. Since the death of Mr. Babb the deceased had made her home with her only daughter, Mrs. Mary Warner, at Greenwood, where she passed away on Jan. 22, 1913. Mrs. Babb in earlier years was a member of the Lutheran church but united with the Presbyterian church of Greenwood more than twenty years ago. Although blind for may years the deceased was until recent years an active, cheerful woman of strong mental and moral character; a devoted mother, good neighbor, true friend with ready sympathy for all in times of need. During the last years of failing health the devotion of her daughter and her family was a source of great comfort to her and every care that could be bestowed has been supplied, every wish that could be gratified has been granted and almost her last words were those of appreciation. Besides the four surviving children there is an aged half sister, nine years her junior, at Long Island, New York, also sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. (She was laid to rest in the Greenwood cemetery).
