    1. Re: WICALUME-D Digest V98 #11
    2. Hello all! I have just joined this Calumet Cty site and am excited to know that there are others researching this area. (note to Debie: I am especially excited about your work with the New Holstein City Cemetery!) Our AWE family settled in New Holstein in 1865 (spent 12 years in Lockport NY-Niagara Cty) after emigrating from Mecklenberg State, Germany in 1853. This last August I "discovered" that my great-great-grandparents, Johann and Sofe AWE are buried in the New Holstein City Cemetery! It is a tall marble obelisk located to the back, left of the center circle. One panel has the dates for Johann (GEB 3/16/1836, GEST 2/15/1916) and another panel for Sofe (GEB 11/24/1828, GEST 2/19/1899)...and...another panel is engraved what appears to be "Old German" text, maybe a Bible verse? The marble is very worn and I was not successful in making a rubbing. I took as best a photo as I could, scanned it into my computer and tried to enhance it so it could be read...it is practically impossible! Is there anyone in the New Holstein area that can take a look at this stone and try to read the Old German text for me? I won't be up to that area until next summer (I live in Waukegan IL). Many thanks to anyone that can help! Sincerely, your "cousin", Carol AWE Mayfield
