Author: handrich Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.calumet/1098.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Do you have access to the 1930 Census? Stephen Fuchs (age 46) is listed, along with Catherine (42), Catherine (20), and Edward (7) in the city of Milwaukee (enumeration district 262). The first three list "Hungary" as their place of birth; the listing for Edward shows Wisconsin. The census enumerator made a notation in the margin showing "56th St." Stephen reported that he married at age 22; Catherine, at 18. Steven's occupation appears to be "Mixer," but that part of the entry isn't too legible. >From the little bit of research I just looked up, the "Croatian-Hungarian Agreement" of 1868 spelled out Croatia's political status in the Hungarian-ruled portion of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This alignment continued until the end of WWI, so it would appear that Croatia was, in fact, part of "Hungary" at the time the Fuchs family lived there. That doesn't tell you anything about their specific point of origin, but it supports the information they reported for the census. He is who our line is through, but the whole Neff and adoption thing has me confused. It sounds like William was Marleah's grandson? There were MANY mines in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan - Calumet & Hecla (C & H) being one of the biggest. Try going to the Houghton County, Michigan board. They have a lot of information for you to start with. (I am descended from people born/raised up there - but looking here and Manitowoc for relatives that intermarried into that Michigan family.)
