Author: JodiSweere Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.calumet/1106.3.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I was born and raised in that area and have been there. My great-grandparents lived in Charlestown and are buried there in St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery. If you look on Google Map, you will see Charlestown about 2 miles southeast of Chilton in Calumet county on Hwy. 151. Present day Hayton is located nearby, on Weeks and Center roads. Hayton Hillside cemetery is also shown on the map. A satellite view will show you there are many existing buildings. Hayton had a mill and you can still see the mill pond between Mill road and Weeks road. There were 2 bars in the area that I know of, one was on the east side of the mill pond where the dam is, it was a large old historic building. This one would be the best candidate for a hostel / inn. If I recall correctly it had a stable right in the building which was common for tavern of that era. It had a beautiful view with large windows facing the Mill pond. The other bar was the middle building of the group of three on the corner of Wa! shington and 151. The buildings along 151 look mainly like small stores, not originally built for bars. Also on the map one mile east of Hayton is Church road, which leads south to St. Martin's Catholic Church property which is on the corner of Church road and Country trunk T. Author: handrich Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.wisconsin.counties.calumet/1106.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Although Charlestown is now the name of the township, there WAS a settlement with that name, and it apparently IS modern-day Hayton. According to information in "Wisconsin - Its Territorial and State Post Offices" published in 1995 by the Wisconsin Postal History Society (page 45), the post office there was established on May 10, 1849 as "Charlestown" with William Roberts as postmaster. The name was changed to "Hayton" on February 19, 1873 with Hubbard S. Watson as postmaster. The post office was discontinued March 30, 1930 with mail service then provided from Brillion. Also, in "Wisconsin - Its Counties, Townships, and Villages," compiled in 1994 by Wendy Uncapher and Linda Herrick, Hayton is identified on page 8 with its previous name of "Charlestown." In the volume "Romance of Wisconsin Place Names," by Robert E. Gard and L.G. Sorden (1968), Hayton is described (page 54) with its earliest name as "Wallerville," in honor of Parley Waller, one of its earliest settlers and businessmen. The name was then changed to "School Section" and then "Dicksville." Later still (presumably in 1849, when the post office was established) it became "Charlestown," named after the Charlestown Indian tribe that had migrated there -- along with the Stockbridge and Brothertown tribes. Of course, check your sources carefully, because the references could easily refer to the settlement with that name (depending on the time period) OR the township where it was located. Good look with your research! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My father's family (Elias is my mother's side) has family not far from Alma/St. Louis in Gratiot Co. I couldn't see anything on the Ancestry site because I don't have a paid subscription (eventually, but no $ right now) and I did get to see some of the stuff on My Heritage. George I was much younger than Hubert and I am guessing since he was just a little guy when Balthasar died that he looked to Hubert as a father-figure (it lists Hubert as his father on his marriage license). Now that I know that George had strong ties to Gratiot County, Michigan (being an Innkeeper - not far from a tavern keeper in those days) I can start looking into their site to see what I find. George obviously had the knowledge for the business given that his parents did that, too. Thanks for the information. If there is anything I can help you with, let me know. I have followed a bit of each of the siblings census and that there is pictures of the Atchison Elias family's stones on Find-a-Grave as well. In the 1870 census, Balthasar was listed as a tavern keeper; my g-g-grandfather also was doing that type of work and also farmed. Do you have any pictures? 1. Re: [WICALUME] CHARLESTOWN
    2. Charlestown is a township within Calumet county.  I believe Hayton is a small settlement within the township. I had a family member who lived in Hayton.  His WWI draft registration record showed him living in Hayton and the 1930 census indicates Charlestown township. If you check Google Maps and look at the aerial view, you can see an area with a few houses surrounded by farmland.  I think that's Hayton.  The Rootsweb page for Calumet county has some more background.  It says there were three cemetaries in Charlestown.  Here's the cemetary page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~calumet/ccem.htm This shows where Charlestown is in relation to the rest of the county:  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wicalume/CalumetTownshipColor.jpg One Catholic church is listed in the township:  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~calumet/ccath.htm I didn't see any other churches listed.  Here is a little description of Hayton, as of 1881: Hayton. This village is near the line of the Wisconsin Central Railroads, two miles below Gravesville, and the same distance east of Chilton. The first settler upon its site was O. J. Watrous, who located in June, 1849, and built a sawmill. It happened that the land upon which the village was to grow was State school property, and it accordingly platted by the Commissioners of the School Lands. It was first called Wallersville in honor of Parley Wller, a settler of prominence; afterwards went by the simple name of School Section, and later Dicksville. It was named Hayton in 1853. The village now contains a population of about 300 inhabitants, has two hotels, several general stores, a tannery (Helfrich & Co.), a saw and grist-mill, with other trades represented. The Ormsby Lime Company manufactures some of its best material here, having run a side track to the main line of the railroad. Hayton had once fair expectations of being chosen as the county seat, Mr. Waller proving a bold champion in the cause. Source:  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~calumet/histry10.htm There's lots more on the rootsweb pages that may be relevant. Hope this helps.            KRC ----- Original Message ----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com To: WICALUME-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 1:49:44 PM Subject: [WICALUME] CHARLESTOWN This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
