My name is Joanne Merritt Bortner and I live in Western PA. I'm researching several surnames in Barron Co. My granparents were Milton Merritt and Minnie Johnson. My ggrandparents were Leroy & Clarissa Thompson Merritt and George & Mary Drolson Johnson. The Merritts lived in Ulysses and the Johnsons lived near Pleasant Valley. Leroy Merritt owned the land that the old Ulysses school was on, in fact he named the old town. He had a grocery store and acted as postmaster and was active in the Larson's Corner Church. My grandmother, Minnie Johnson, kept a scrapbook including several obits. I also have old photos, postcards etc. that include lots of "clues" for others.
