    3. Good afternoon. If I was to try to find an obituary from 1917 in Rice Lake, where would I look? I am from Ontario and unfamiliar with the names of the newspapers at that time, or of how I could search for an obituary, bearing in mind my locality.' Thanks for all help. Joan

    3. Hi Joan and others, The most widely read newspaper in the Rice Lake area would be the Rice Lake Chronotype, which has been in circulation since 1874. There have been other newspapers from the Rice Lake area, including the Rice Lake Bulletin, the Rice Lake Call (aka Union Herald), the Rice Lake Cheek, and the Rice Lake Journal, the Rice Lake Independent, the Rice Lake Leader and the Rice Lake Times. Most of these were short-lived and eventually merged with the Chronotype. In regards to your question about obtaining information from the newspapers of the area, there is a library service that does this type of thing. This library service is working on indexing the birth notices, marriage announcements and obituaries and putting that index online. I would encourage you to visit this website - http://www.bclic.org/ then click on the second "Catalog" link on the left side of the page. This will open a form. Don't fill in the form on this page, but click on words "Newspaper Index" on the green strip near the top of the page. Another form will open and in this second form type in the surname that you are looking for. If they have entered the info into the system for that surname, a listing will come up. By clicking on each name that comes up, you will be able to see a little more information on that person (type of record, etc.) This also will help pinpoint the date if you don't know when an event was printed. (PLEASE NOTE: if the info you are looking for doesn't come up in this search feature, don't worry, it may be that they haven't entered that information yet, but that there might still be information for what you are seeking. :-) ) After finding what's listed in the index, go to this page - http://www.bclic.org/news.html. Here, you will see a listing of the various newspapers from the county, which library covers what years, the format in which it is stored (microfilm, etc.), the type of resource it is and costs for getting copies of articles. If you know the dates that the birth, marriage or obituary info was printed, it would be extremely helpful to the people who are willing to do the lookups for you. If you don't know the publication dates, you will need to give them the person's full name, along with the full date the event took place and the type of event you are looking for (again, birth announcements, marriage announcements, obituaries). I don't believe they will do lookups without that information. To request these copies, I would suggest you send a SASE and payment to the library that's closest to the newspaper (ie. Rice Lake Public Library for Chronotype copies, etc.) I have a listing of the library's addresses on our 'Addresses' page, here - http://www.rootsweb.com/~wibarron/addresses.htm. I hope this will help to answer any questions in regards to obtaining newspaper information. Good luck with your research. Nance Barron Co. WIGenWeb coordinator Joan Cybolsky wrote: >Good afternoon.
