Erik Gilseth, farmer, P O Chetek, Barron county, was born in Norway, August 28, 1837. After leaving school he learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed for some time, as well as being engaged in farming. In 1868 he immigrated to America and settled in the Chippewa Valley, near Menomonie, Dunn county, where he bought a farm, and also worked for the Knapp, Stout Lumber Co. one year. In 1873 he sold his farm and moved to Barron county, where he entered 160 acres of land under the homestead law, on section three, Chetek township. He has since added 120 acres, and has about 100 improved. Mr. Gilseth married, in Norway, April 29, 1862, Mary A. Bordahl, and they have four children living: Annie, Johnnie, Julia and Sarah, all of whom are at home. When Mr. Gilseth first came to Chetek there were but four settlers east of the lakes. In politics he is a strong republican, and is a member of the Lutheran church. Since coming here he has been fairly successful as a farmer! , and is a fair representative of the Norwegian class of farmers. --Transcribed from the "Historical and Biographical Album of the Chippewa Valley Wisconsin, 1891-2," page 843.
