At its inception the chamber had sixty loyal members, with Frank Hein at the helm as president. Its quarters then were over the present Holtz Dry Good store. One of their big achievementsin 1920 was in inducing the Pure Oil Company to locat a station here, which not long afterward was followed by a Standard Oil filling station. The growth in 1921 to 179 members necessitated their moving into larger quarter, so they moved into their present quarter over the Unique Theatre, at the same time adding more furniture and equipment. It was during 1921 that the weekly noonday luncheon was started and maintained for almost a year. Its purpose ,and it did it, was to bring men close together and get a better interchange of ideas The monthly farmers picnic of the last two summers have been fostered by the Chamber of Commerce and have been very insrumental in bringing the farmer and merchant to each other's viewpoint. Before coming to Ladysmith in 1900 Mr Rogness resided at Cadott and Glenwood, at the later place being married on October 25, 1895. Mrs Rogness preceded him in death two years ago.He is survived by two children, Edna A Rogness of Eau Claire and Mrs Gertrude Stevens of Oakland,California. They were both riding a car loaded with pulp wood when just south of the Conrath station the draw bar pulled out and dropping down, derailing the car. The car tipped over into the ditch throwing both brakemen to the ground and pinning them underneath. Orr was pinned at the legs by the end of the car and Wade fell into the ditch with the car and pulp wood completely covering him. The fact that the ditch was deep enough so that the car frormed a partial bridge over him is all that saved him from instant death. Both men were compelled to lie there until the balance of the train crew and section hands could unload the pulp and cut away and pry up the car sufficient to get them out. They were rushed to the hospital at Ladysmith where their injuries were taken care of. Neither one was seriously inuured nor had any bones broken. One left for his home Sunday evening and the other Monday evening. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ WI-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! The voluminous report on the Copper Falls and Bad River power problems and scenic attractions is a case in point. Catawba Review est. 1923 Ogema Record est. 1916 Kennan Free Press est.1916 Mellen Weekly est. 1901 Prentice News Calumet A fire at Prentice, January 14, 1918, burned the entire plant of the News Calumet including all files of the several predecessors, as the Prentice Journal, Prentice Calument, Prentice News and News Calumet. By courtesy of the Phillips times, the pioneer newspaper of Price county since January 6, 1877, it is yet possible to trace those forerunners of the News Calumet, as well as other journalistic ventures in the southern part of Price county. The late F W Sackett (1847-1917) was founder of the Phillips times and sometime mentor and partner with his younger brother,George E Sackett, who with the latter's son, Freeman, now owns and edits that paper. At the death of F W Sackett, he left many printed pages of an unfinished History of Price County. It is that unfinished history which is kindly lent for review. It was on October 8, 1891 that A C Monroe camefrom Cadott to Prentice and establsihed the Prentice Journal, which suspended the follwong spring. After a few months he resumed and published until June 1894, when he sold to a group of Republicans at Phillips. G Vandercook succeeded at Prentice, until January 1895, when he was rewarded with an appointment as Assistant Secretary of State. Frank H Bell came from Ashland to Prentice, soon bought all the stock and called his paper the Prentice Calumet. Upon Mr Bell's death on September 30, 1901, he was succeeded by his 17 year old son, Mark R Bell who had two years earlier begun his own school weekly, the Prentice Tribune but had suspended August 13, because of the continued illness of his father. Soon to affect the Prentice field, a native of Sheboygan, E R Barager, with a long series of newspaper experiences already acquired, went to Kennan and began publication of the Kennan News May 17, 1902. The Prentice Calumet later suffered its first fire, young Mr Bell went to work in the west, undetermined to return. Mr Barager moved to Prentice in January 1904 and continued his paper as the Prentice News until it burned, April 26, 1911. Meantime the Calumet had been going again for a number of years and after the fire destroyed the News, Barager bought the Calumet and carried title of the News Calumet. He conducted the paper until sale to L C Prentice and A L Grimm in October 1915. Mr Prentice, though a brilliant writer, was without previous experience. Mr Grimm had been with the Prentice Calumet, 1910-11, going for a while with Mr Bell to the Ladysmith News. He was for nearly four years with the Alton Iowa Democrat, before returning to Prentice. Looking again toward Kennan and Mr Sacket's history(this time in collaboration with W H Wilson of the Times) there is a rare story of a hermit printer, the Ohioan, William W Yarham, who sometimes helped the Phillips times. Yarham bought wooded land near Kennan, built a shanty and there issued a three column folio called the Kennan Banner. Some time later, on April 3, 1891, still a half year before Prentice had afforded a newspaper, Mr Yarham was found dead in his shanty, the proof read and corrected on the last number of his paper. From the time of Barger's departure for Prentice in January 1904, Kennan was without a newspaper for the dozen years, until B J Fuller started the Kennan Free Press, April 6, 1916. After nearly six years, in January 1922, Mr Fuller sold to Thos.D Larson, who had been for a year with the Prentice News Calumet.Three months later Mr Larson rejoined the News Calumet and the Free Press became property of The Northern Publishing Company, which had just incorporated. Ogema seems never to have had a paper until the Record's services was established by the present management in 1916. Except for a Catawba section in the Kennan Free Press for a few months in 1916, that village never had individual representation until ths corporation's beginning of the Catawba Review in 1923. Located in the heart of the Iron Range Timber Belt, it is enabled to get practically all its necessary supply from within a radius of 100 miles. The chief article manufactured is commercial veneer, although considerable cheese box stock is also produced and shipped in the knock down to the different assembling plants. There the boxes are made up and delivered to various cheese factories. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ WI-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
