    3. To me this is a puzzlement; a lot of the Whittington families changed the spelling after the Civil War, as if to hide from the carpetbaggers ( really these were IRS agents). Yet, time after time I can not find a reason for the family themselves changing the spelling. A local cus and I have gone over this several times and I seem more inclined to go along with you and her, as she has an MA in library workings and my MS is industrail psych. But, why did the census takers change the spelling in several states and/or places and not in others? Did some Washington, D.C. person issue a 'correct spelling'. Well, interesting to learn that I was not the only one confused.
