I have found the same family described as Whittenton, Whitinton, Whitington, Whitenton, Whittintin, etc., etc., etc. These were simply misspellings by the various record-keepers. I have chosen to use the correct spelling, except for transcriptions of original documents. In those, I transcribed them exactly as they were. The same is true of first names - I have chosen to use Sarah, for instance, rather than Sahrah, which was simply a misspelling by a census taker. There are many other examples I can give you.
