Dear friends and cousins, Many of you already know this, but some do not. rootsweb mailing lists only allow plain text and they do not allow attachments. This means there is no way you can get a virus, worm or trojan (horse), etc through any email you receive from one of their lists. Please see their explanation at: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#virus "RootsWeb's mailing lists are filtered and attachments are removed. A virus that is distributed as an attachment will not reach you through a RootsWeb mailing list." The current macro virus fad is (innocently) spread by people using Outlook. Look at the header of the email you receive -- at the "XMAILER" field If you see something like this: =========================================================== .... X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2314.1300 =========================================================== be careful .... it is only by those emails (using Outlook) can you receive a macro virus. If you are not using Outlook -- and don't open any attachments -- you won't get the macro viruses (or any other virus, for that matter). Tom Cloud <[email protected]>
