Whittington) had a brother named Francis Earl Whittington. Rufus married Mattie Virginia Cleveland in 1898 in Georgia. Francis Earl married Mattie's sister, Emma Cleveland, also in 1898. Francis Earl may have moved to Alabama since some of his children (Sidney, Pershing (Paul), E. Lemon, Emma, and Wilma) lived there. I have been unable to identify my great-grandparents (the parents of Rufus and Francis Earl. If our Earl matches the description of your Earl, please let me know.
