The informant was Levi Murray WHITTINGTON of Marlboro County, S.C. (born 2/7/1864). The recorder was his great uncle Jesse E. WHITTINGTON of Columbia, S.C. The narrative is as follows: "________ WHITTINGTON was the father of several children but I cannot recall his first name....My grandfather was his son and I recall 3 great aunts who were sisters of my grandfather. Nathaniel WHITTINGTON m. Peggy ___________ a Scotch woman Elizabeth WHITTINGTON m. Maj. Benjamin Bonicky ROGERS _________ WHITTINGTON m. a BROWN and Brownsville, Marlboro County was named for his family. Sally (I think) WHITTINGTON m. twice...first time to John IRBY and when he died she married a Mr. BETHEA. I think there were other children who went to Ala., Miss, & Texas. Nathaniel WHITTINGTON was called 'Long Nat' and his wife was called Peggy and was born in Scotland, coming to America when she was 12 years old....They had five children. George WHITTINGTON who went to Texas. Francis WHITTINGTON called Frank. Frances WHITTINGTON who was called Frankie..a girl Mary Ann WHITTINGTON who was called Polly Ann Katherine Elizabeth WHITTINGTON...'My mother' All of this family removed to Alabama about 1835 I think it was and stayed a short time and then removed to Mississippi to join their kinsfolk who had settled in Miss. many years before...Here in Miss. Nathanile (Long Nat) WHITTINGTON died but I do not know whether his wife, Peggy died in Miss. or not. George WHITTINGTON, the oldest child, was with his father when he died in Miss....after that, George went to Galveston, Texas and remained there for a time and then moved 60 miles up the Trinity River where my mother used to get letters from him. The other children perhaps stayed in Miss...Mother used to hear from them but I cannot recall whom they all married." That ends the narrative from the Leonardo Andrea compilation. What I have in records is the following: Liberty County, Texas 1850 Federal Census: Samuel G. MILES age 37 Farmer born S.C. Frances M. MILES age 35 born S.C. Margaret WHITTINGTON age 73 born N.C. John F. MILES age 12 born Louisiana Sophronia MILES age 7 born Louisiana (my gg grandmother) Frances E. MILES age 5 born Louisiana Monterey MILES age 1 born Louisiana Zoradia A. Smith age 17 born Miss. Liberty County 1855 scholastic census (children btw 6 & 16 years): Names of Parent or Guardian Names of Children G.W. WHITTINGTON Eliza J. Jan 1860 of old age. Sick 18 days. On a schedule for which I (stupidly) neglected to write the date there appear the following: G.W. WHITTINGTON age 51 Farmer b. S.C. Lattroice S. WHITTINGTON age 40 b. Louisiana Francis G. WHITTINGTON age 17 b. Louisiana Margaret WHITTINGTON age 15 b. Texas Letticia WHITTINGTON age 11 b. Texas Georgia WHITTINGTON age 6 b. Texas Mary M. Found in the Wallisville Heritage Library: Family group sheet (no author's name or sources attached) Husband's Name: George W. WHITTINGTON b. 1842 in Louisiana Margaret WHITTINGTON b. 1844 in Texas Letitia Ann WHITTINGTON b. 11/16/1848, Wallisville, Texas Georgia Ann WHITTINGTON b. 12/19/1849 Mary May WHITTINGTON b. 5/11/1857 George W. WHITTINGTON, Jr. b. 1860 After the 1850 census, the MILES family does not appear as a unit again and the only members found living thereafter, so far, are: Margaret WHITTINGTON (on a mortality schedule) Sophronia MILES (several records) Monterrey MILES(marriage and census records) Because the aged Margaret WHITTINGTON was living with the MILES family in 1850 and, after the disappearance of the MILES family as a unit, both Sophronia MILES and Monterrey MILES appear in the household of George W. WHITTINGTON in one record or another, I feel confident of a sibling relationship between Frances MILES and George W. WHITTINGTON. Given that sibling relationship and the fact that Peggy is a nickname for Margaret, I feel that the Nathaniel WHITTINGTON (of the Leonardo Andrea narrative above) is most likely the father of both Frances MILES and George W. WHITTINGTON. The largest wiggling fly in the ointment is that the narrator says Peggy was born in Scotland, but the records show Margaret born in N.C. TO GET TO THE POINT: Does anyone out there have a scrap of information that might shed some light on the above connections?
